About EnergisticsEarlier POSC (Petrotechnical
Open Standards Consortium)
  • An international not for profit consortium body
    engaged in resolving the wide spectrum EP data
    management standardization issues amongst the
    member organization/companies.
  • Uniquely designed to unite industry, people,
    issues and ideas to facilitate EP information
    sharing and business process integration.
  • Provides open specifications and standards for
    information modeling, information management,
    data application integration over the life
    cycle of E P assets
  • New brand identity from POSC to Energistics
    launched during the 2006 Standards Summit
    Reception in Houston on November 8, 2006.
  • Mission of Energistics To deliver to the
    upstream oil and gas industry the means to
    produce, deploy and maintain common information
    and data standards.

Through Its SIG communities POSC/Energistics has
developed EP reference standards, data
standards, data model standards, workflow
reporting standards in various EP data domains
such as
  • Developed and/or acquired hundreds of sets of EP
    Reference Data Standards and catalog standards
  • WITSML drilling standards for data movement and
    integration
  • Well Header Data Transfer Standard (WellHeaderML)
  • Well Path Data transfer standards(WellPathML)
  • EPICenter model continues to be reference point
    for many products.
  • Global Well Identity Services a new initiative
    with IHS.
  • PWLS standard for log classification.
  • PRODML standard for production optimization
  • ChemicalUse standard for chemical used in EP
    industry

Major Energistics Initiatives
PRODML
  • Exploit the benefits of highly instrumented
    producing fields seeking optimal operation of
    these assets.
  • A key element in these achievements is making
    good use of the near real-time data streaming
    from the field to the office or operations center
  • This requires the use of industry standards for
    data and for the communications and computing
    infrastructure.
  • Evolution of PRODML as a result
  • Culminating into Smart_fields( also known as
    DOFF/e-Field/I_Field etc.)

Major Energistics Initiatives
Geophysical WorkGroup
  • With Lead from ONGC, Geophysics Standards
    Assessment workgroup under Energistics started.
  • Workgroup meeting held in Oct Nov 07 with
    Indian EP companies and service companies
    operating in India.
  • An Assessment Report to be published by
    Energistics with major inputs from ONGC Seismic
    Task Force.
  • Energistics working towards global participation
    and associating with SEG,EAGE etc.
  • Two pilots started by workgroup on SEGY Header
    Velocity data format

DATA Management SIG
Major Energistics Initiatives
  • Associated with Data Store Products Services.
  • Focus is on data stores that data stores that
    manages results of E P studies and projects.
  • Periodically best practices are published.

ONGC Activities SIG wise
PWLS (Practical Well Log Standards) Under
Geology SIG
Focus on new consensus, needs and requirements
for well log standards.
Activities/ Plans
Implemented first in WOB, Mumbai in Finder and
now being implemented across ONGC through EPINET
dataviewer. Adoption and utilization of PWLS
mnemonics by interpretation s/w will provide
further improvements in the work processes.

WITSML (Well-site Information Transfer Standard
Mark-up Language)
Activities/ Plans
WITSML Standards are already being used for LWD,
MWD objects for log data transfer in Mumbai
Region. The ongoing SCADA project in ONGC will
be WITSML compliant. Most of the data objects of
WITSML are expected to be covered. To be
implemented for other data objects like Mud Log
etc. and in other Regions through
Geologix. Efforts are on to absorb WITSML
standards into EPINET for real time data access
into EPINET.

Geophysical Standards
Activities/ Plans
ONGCs initiative has led to creation of business
case for Geophysical SIG formation under
Energistics. ONGC is now actively participating
in coming assessment task and two pilot workgroup
teams formed for SEGY header and velocity data.

ONGC Interactions / Benefits
ONGC joined POSC (Aug 2001) to reap the benefits
of EP data management standards and best
practices. POSC as consultant conducted review
of EPINET project, ONGCs corporate master
database after its Phase-I. EPINET data model
is based on POSC compliant software from
Schlumberger Finder. EPINET is in process of
absorbing reference standards from POSC. PWLS(
Practical Well Log Standards ) is one such step.

ONGC Interactions / Benefits Contd.
Seismic Standardization has been a key activity
in EPINET Phase-II. Coming efforts in Geophysical
SIG will be of great significance. Jointly
Conducted conference/seminars in IORS 2004 ,
PetroTech -05, SPG-06 , PetroTech 07 and
SPG-08. ONGC persons have participated in
WITSML/PRODML technical SIGs and public
seminars. Director(Exploration) in his capacity
as elected Director on board of Energistics is
providing strategic value to Energistics plans,
programmes and activities.

WITSML
  • Automation of many manual processes in current
    data flows
  • -Contractors can automatically push data into
    corporate data store.
  • Contractors can share data with one another at
    the rig site.
  • Partners can pull data for their reports.
  • Operators can push statutory reporting data for
    reports to regulator.
  • A single standard to make the vision possible
    thus reducing industry cost.

ONGC Activities SIG wise
PRODML (Production mark-up Language)
Activities/ Plans
PRODML standards are planned to be used in PMT JV
along with Reliance and BG under Production Data
management program (PDMS). ONGC is working with
Energistics for developing planning for the
same. Within ONGC, with SCADA in place real time
well test and production data will be available.
PRODML standards will be useful in utilizing
these data in production optimization. More
details and clarity are sought from Energistics
before planning of absorbing into ONGC workflows.

EP data model
Activities/ Plans
EPINET database implemented using POSC compliant
data model (Epicenter Data Model). Development
work in lithology standards, Distributed
Temperature Survey, Document management to be
watched closely, participate and absorb.

GUWI (Global Unique Well Identifier)
Activities/ Plans
Initiated by Energistics with IHS for
international well naming catalog ( Global Unique
Well Identifier) is another area for possible
involvement

Conclusion
  • ENERGISTICS is driven in collaborative approach
    by EP companies, vendors.
  • Automation of data flow is key for improved
    performance and business value.
  • It needs standards for data content transfer.
    XML and web-services are proven tools.
  • To derive maximum benefit from technology
    initiatives SCADA, EPINET,ICE Collaboration
    centres etc., ONGC is in the process of adopting
    and promoting these standards driven by
    Energistics.
