1Year 8/9
Action Planning
2Aims
- To introduce and develop the technique of Action
Planning - To enable pupils to complete an Action Plan
- To understand SMART Targets
3Goals
- By having a goal, this means that you have
something to aim for. - By having a goal, you have direction. (Imagine
playing a game of football with no goals you
would not know which way to go!!).
4Types of Goals
- Personal Goals
- Learning Goals
- Career Goals
eg. to get a new i-pod to go to
Australia eg. to complete History coursework
to learn to play the guitar eg. to get a
part-time job to become a photographer
5- In pairs, look at the following goals and decide
whether they are Personal (P), Learning (L) or
Career (C) goals.
Now do worksheet 1 My Goals Compare your answers
with your partner. Do you both agree that you
understand the difference between P, L, C goals?
6Targets
- When we have a large job to do, it is often
easier to break it down into smaller parts. - This also works with goals.
- The smaller parts of goals are called targets.
- Setting TARGETS will help you to achieve GOALS
7Example of Targets
- Gareths Goal to be a footballer
- His 1st Target to be chosen for the school team
- His 2nd Target to play in 4 of the next 6 matches
- and so on
8Target Setting
- An important part of Action Planning, is the
setting of effective targets. - For targets to be effective they should be

10SMART Targets ?
Consider each of the following targets and
decide whether you think they are SMART or not-
- I will draw my next graph correctly.
- I will get better at English.
- I will be the first person to land on Mars.
- I will save 20 by the end of the year.
- I will get fit.
- I will be on MSN for no more than 1 hour per
night. - Make each target SMART if necessary
- Now back to Gareth!
11Example of Targets
- Gareths Goal to be a footballer
- His 1st Target to be chosen for the school team
- His 2nd Target to play in 4 of the next 6 matches
- Using SMART, what would he need to do to achieve
this
12Planning
- In order to meet your goal and achieve your
targets you need a - CUNNING PLAN
- (otherwise known as an Action Plan)
13Action Planning
- To put together an Action Plan you have to think
of it in 3 stages- - Think about where you are now.
- Think about where you want to be.
- Think about how you are going to get there.
- When you go back to it later, review if you have
met your goal, if not, draw up a new Action Plan.
14Action Planning
How am I going to get there?
Where am I now?
Where do I want to be?
Review and Evaluate

Career Action Plan. - action plan
- This needs to be kept safely and reviewed at a
future date.

- What should you do occasionally
- with your action plan?
21Reflect and Review
Let us now look back at the aims of the
session to see if they have been met To
introduce and develop the technique of Action
Planning To enable pupils to complete an Action
Plan To understand SMART Targets Do you
understand about Targets and Goals? Do you know
what SMART Targets are? Have you drawn up an
Action Plan for yourself?
