- The Pensionado Act was issued by General Howard
Taft letting young and promising Filipino
students to study in America. - The Pensionado program was funded by the United
States government.

of rich influential families during the American
regime in the Philippines, which had connections
with the colonial government. - There were also some Filipinos that came from a
working background. - They were the 1st large wave of Filipino
immigration to the United States

5When did the Pensionados arrive in the U.S.?
- October 1903, the first group of the Pensionados
arrived, composing of 200 students, selected from
20,000 applicants - 1903-1930s, about 500 Pensionados arrived in
America.

Filipinos - President McKinley wanted a smooth transition
towards Philippine independence by establishing
government and educational systems in the
Philippines.

- The Fair celebrated the 100th year of the
Louisiana Purchase - The biggest fair ever to showcase over fifty
foreign countries - Emphasized the dominance of the Caucasians.
-The largest and finest colonial exhibit.

- The largest exhibit of the Fair, it was 47 acres.
- Built natural environment for the villagers
- 1,110 native Filipinos including the Negritos,
Igorot, Moros,and the Visayans. - Main event

- I could not bear it neither could any other of
our Caucasian party. I went to the Philippine
village today and saw the wild, barbaris Igorot,
who eat dogsThey are the lowest type of
civilization I ever saw and thirst for blood.

at the Philippine Exhibit - Many Pensionados stood up to the assumptions of
their people
