Space Planning Update

Problem Classroom Needs
  • Many classrooms are old, poorly designed, and
    equipped.
  • There are not enough properly sized classrooms to
    meet academic needs
  • Existing classrooms are overcrowded

Problem Departmental Space
  • There needs to be a consolidation and
    re-organization of departmental space
  • Many faculty are forced to occupy offices at
    some distance from main department
  • Many offices are substandard

Problem Support and Campus Services
  • Dempsey Hall is old and in need of renovation and
    reorganization of space
  • Several departments housed in this facility need
    to be relocated to provide more visible and
    convenient access, such as Admissions Office and
    Adult Education (Graduate School, Weekend Evening
    Degree Program, Continuing Education)
  • Many departments are in need of additional space
    for operational efficiency
  • Services (post office document services )
    should be relocated

Problem Library Services
  • The library is old and poorly configured
  • The library suffers from a lack of space
    necessary to meet current demands
  • The Testing Center must be relocated to meet
    needs of the library

ProblemAthletic/Recreational Needs
  • Major storage needs in the Kolf Sports Center
  • Need for space dedicated to intramural and
    recreation use
  • Request for planning/preliminary design submitted
    to U.W. System

Planning Analysis
  • Facilities Planners met with each department or
    support unit to review space data and project
    future needs
  • A study was also performed on adequacy of
    classroom space
  • Polk Library was also reviewed in a special
    planning study with DFD and UW System
    Administration

  • Total GPR space shortage 213,952
  • a.s.f. This total is broken down below
  • Classroom Analysis identified a shortage of ..
    55,000 a.s.f.
  • Polk Library Building Analysis identified a
    shortage of 25,423 a.s.f.
  • Other academic and support space needs total
    of.. 133,529 a.s.f.

Planning Objectives
  • Renovate Polk facility for modern library and IT
    needs
  • Creation of new student and faculty support
    centers
  • Improve access to University resources for
    students and visitors
  • Creation of appropriate classrooms
  • Consolidate Departmental Space
  • Reassign existing space for efficiency
  • Construct additional space to meet academic needs

Planning Decisions
  • Programs with unique facility needs will not
    be displaced
  • Arts and Communication and Fredric March Theatre
    - Speech and Hearing program phased out, other
    programs absorb space, plus addition
  • Halsey Science Center- Geography relocated, other
    programs absorb space
  • Polk Library- IT and Library to occupy space,
    plus addition
  • PEHP Athletic Needs- Will be addressed in Kolf
    and Albee only
  • Intramural and Recreation Needs- Will be met
    through new construction

  • Admissions/Alumni/Welcome Center Located near
    front door of campus
  • Clow Faculty College Of Business Administration
    should be relocated for most efficient use of
    space

  • College of Nursing Current location serves the
    college well
  • College of Education and Human Services Must be
    relocated to accommodate space needs
  • Harrington Hall Is not configured to provide
    quality academic space
  • Childrens Learning and Care Center must be
    relocated Possible incorporation into some type
    of new construction
  • Wall House, Pollock House, and Oviatt House
    Continue to serve current assigned units
  • Program Revenue Facilities Not impacted by
    analysis
