Title: Vitamin D Deficiency'A Newly Discovered Epidemic

1
Vitamin D Deficiency.A Newly Discovered
Epidemic of Immense Importance to Everyone
2
Michael Holick is considered a world authority on
vitamin D metabolism
Vitamin D deficiency is now recognized as an
epidemic in the United States.

95 of our vitamin D comes from the skin
synthesis in response to exposure to the sun!
Dont look to food as a source. The only good
source is cod liver oil or oily fish.

Why vitamin D is important for cancer patients
Newest information reveals that up to 28
different cancers are related to the amount of
vitamin D in the blood. Levels of
25-hydroxyvitamin D below 50 nmol/L are
associated with a 30 to 50 increased risk of
incident colon, prostate, and breast cancer,
along with higher mortality from these cancers
(1,2)
If you have one of these cancers odds are you are
vitamin D deficient!

Patients Deficient in Vitamin D3 ()
All Cancer Patients
Prostate Cancer Patients
20
  • D deficiency is extremely common
  • 70 of Whittier Patients with Cancer!
  • Vitamin D plays a role in the following
  • osteoporosis
  • osteomalacia/rickets
  • risk for falls, grip strength, body aches
  • 4) 28 different cancers
  • 5) multiple sclerosis
  • 6) Infection
  • 7) hypertension
  • 8) diabetes mellitus I, II

21
  • Vitamin D directly kills tumor cells by forcing
    them to
  • a) slow their growth
  • b) induce apoptosis
  • c) choke off blood supply (anti-angiogenesis)
  • d) strengthens immunity against tumors
  • The vitamin also
  • strengthens bone
  • enhances muscle strength
  • 3) and relieves pain in prostate cancer patients.

An Increment of 25 nMol/L of 25(OH) D3 is
Associated with the Following Decrements of
Cancer (1000-1200 IU/d)
36
2 Light skin Caucasians
3 Blacks
Re-exposure at 6 times the dose of UVB of
one Black
37
Causes of vitamin D deficiency
Reduced skin synthesis
Effect
Sunscreen use ? absorption of UVB
radiation by sunscreen Skin pigment ?
absorption of UVB radiation
by melanin Aging ?
reduction of 7-dehydrocholesterol
in the skin Season, latitude,
Where you Live and time of day ? number of solar
UVB photons
reaching the earth
depending on zenith angle of
the sun (the more oblique the
angle, the fewer UVB
photons reach the
earth)
Reduces vitamin D3 synthesis SPF 8 by 92.5
Reduces vitamin D3 synthesis by as much as
99 Reduces vitamin D3 synthesis by 75 in a
70-year-old Above about 35 degrees north
latitude (Atlanta), little or no vitamin D3 can
be produced from November to February
38
Causes of vitamin D deficiency
Decreased bioavailability
Effect
Impairs the bodys ability to absorb vitamin
D Reduces availability of vitamin D in blood
Malabsorption ? reduction of fat absorption,
resulting from cystic fibrosis, celiac disease,
Whipples disease, Crohns disease bypass
surgery, medications that reduce cholesterol
absorption Obesity ? sequestration of vitamin D
in body fat
Increased catabolism
Anticonvulsants, glucocorticoids, (AIDS Rx), and
anti-rejection medications
Activates the destruction of 25-hydroxyvitamin D
and 1.25-dihydroxy vitamin D to inactive
calcitroic acid
