Whats a Warrant?
  • The warrant is the link between the claim and the
    grounds.
  • In other words, the warrant tells us whether or
    not we should believe the authors claim.
  • If the warrant is faulty, then the entire
    argument has a problem.
  • Think back to the WWF example from last week

WWF Example
  • Claim WWF is fake (factual claim).
  • Grounds The results are never reported in the
    Sports section of the newspaper.
  • Warrant Only the results of legitimate sports
    are published in the newspaper (argument from
    authority underlying presumption
  • Is this warrant strong? Or can you see
    problemsand counterarguments?
