Why interdisciplinary? Rationale
  • Communication identifies a range of knowledge,
    skills and understandings which cross
disciplinary boundaries and that are essential to
    support learning in all subjects

3
Structure
  • The Communication domain is organised from Level
    1 to Level 6
  • Each level includes a Learning focus statement
and from level 4 a set of standards organised by
    dimension
  • There are two dimensions in Communication
  • Listening, viewing and responding
  • Presenting

4
Communication dimensions
  • Listening, viewing and responding
  • This dimension relates to how students gain
access to knowledge, ideas, skills and
    understandings and how they respond
  • Explicit teaching
  • Communication conventions strategies
  • Understanding subject-specific language
  • Interpret information
  • Clarify meaning- ask questions

5
Communication dimensions
  • Presenting
  • This dimension is about how students present
their knowledge, ideas, skills and understandings
    to others
  • Explicit teaching
  • Understanding conventions of presentations
  • Reflect on presentations
  • Provide feedback
  • Evaluate to inform future presentations

Issues for teaching and assessment in
Communication
  • Subject specific language needs to be explicitly
    taught
  • Conventions (eg writing a science report, writing
a Bibliography, drawing a map with BOLTSS) need
    to be clearly explained
  • Skills (eg presenting) need to be demonstrated

10
Assessing more than one domain
  • Units of work focusing on more than one domain
  • Identify who will be responsible for the teaching
    and assessment for each domain
  • One teacher might teach and assess all aspects of
    a students learning
  • Two or more teachers might teach and assess
different aspects of a students learning
