1BACKGROUND
On 13th session of the UN Commission on
Sustainable Development (CSD) in May 2005 it was
decided to take action to improve access to water
and sanitation On December 2006, UN General
Assembly 2008 is declared as International Year
of Sanitation (IYS) to help accelerate progress
on sanitation and foster economic and social
development.
2KEY ELEMENTS OF IYS
- The IYS will focus the issue of water and
sanitation at the forefront of the global agenda - It will raise the issue prominently to
politicians, civil society and the public in
general - Focus on the need to take effective action
3MAIN THRUST AREAS
- Raising awareness of the importance of sanitation
and its impact on achieving other MDGs, from
three perspectives hygiene, household sanitation
and wastewater - Encouraging state Governments and districts to
promote and implement policies and actions for
meeting the sanitation target - Mobilizing communities, particularly womens
groups, towards changing sanitation and hygiene
practices through sanitation-health-education
campaigns
4OBJECTIVES
- Greater outreach on issues of sanitation and
hygiene at the local, national and international
levels - Increased funding for sanitation programmes
- An emphasis on sustainability to ensure that
areas reached will be able to continue providing
access to sanitation on their own

6 FEATURES OF IEC CAMPAIGN
- Providing personal accountability and
responsibility for appropriate use of water and
sanitation facilities and hygiene education - Universally acceptable measures with a string
emotional appeal that cuts across linguistic and
cultural groupings - Special focus of children as a messenger
- Generating awareness on water, sanitation,
hygienic practices and its impact on health - Giving operation and maintenance responsibility
on community - Social monitoring and internal advocacy for
increasing awareness about health and hygiene
issues
