2Testing Equipment
The purpose of the EPIC Combine is to identify
performance potential, training progress, and to
determine the effectiveness of the lifting and
conditioning program design. .
The EPIC Combine tests provide a basis for
predicting those individuals who have a chance to
succeed in power sports. There is a strong
relationship between the results of these three
tests and individuals who achieve a high level of
athletic success.

3Standardized Tests How did we arrive at the
three standardized tests to measure talent?
Our consultant, Boyd Epley, worked at the
University of Nebraska for several years and
learned from his experience. Nebraska football
players were divided into three groups. The
first group were All-Conference or All-American
the second group were players that contributed
but werent considered great players and the
third group were players that were on the team
but didnt contribute much. The great players in
group one all demonstrated high levels of
explosive power and the ability to accelerate and
change directions with great control.

First Time
Second Time
The Ultimate Timer is wireless and collects two
times on the same run. The first set of Tripods
is pictured at 5 yards and the second is pictured
at 10 yards to measure acceleration. Coaches
can set them at any distance. For example,
football coaches may want to collect speed at 20
and 40 yards while baseball may want 30 and 60
yards.
14Ultimate Timer
Use the Ultimate Timer to time post patterns or
time home plate to second base - limited only to
your imagination.

Dash
Portable Floor 4 x 40 wooden testing floor
16Some tests were eliminated because they did not
measure talent. The four tests that measured
power, agility and acceleration were combined
into an index to determine scholarships and
walk-ons to the various sport teams. The 40 yard
dash was included in the winter but not used
during the fall for fear of hamstring injuries.
The remaining three tests created the EPIC Rating
(three test index) in place of the four test
index.
10 Yard Dash
Pro Agility Run
Vertical Jump
The index is scored on a 0 1,000 point system
for each test for each gender. The index combines
the Vertical Jump, Pro Agility Run, and 10 Yard
Dash Index points for the EPIC Rating and if the
rating is high enough the EPIC Star Rating.
17Boyd with Dr. Chris Eskridge and Mike Arthur who
developed the EPIC Rating for Husker Power
The three test EPIC Rating had a .9695
correlation to the four test index. This proves
there is no need to test the 40 yard dash to
determine which athletes have the potential to be
successful in power sports.
18Standardized Test Procedures The NSCA
International Index Testing Committee have
established standardized test procedures. Part
of this process was to standardize the floor
surface. A basketball floor was determined to
provide the safest and most consistent testing
surface. This decision opened the door for
testing to be done indoors day or night and
eliminated many problems such as the amount of
allowable wind. The condition of the field, wind,
rain, temperature have all been eliminated by
doing Combine Testing indoors on a basketball
floor.
Vertical Jump has been measured in a variety of
ways and some involve a calculation subtracting
the height reached from the height jumped. The
EPIC Jump Station eliminated this calculation and
refined the measurement to 1/4 intervals.
19 The Pro Agility Run has been a challenge to
time electronically because the athlete crosses
the start line in the middle of the test and
again at the end of the test. The EPIC Pro
Agility Timer has corrected the problem and has
become the standard used in NSCA competitions.
.
The Epic Timer displays the first two decimal
places of information. The accuracy of the
hardware and software within the Epic Timer is
precise to better than one millisecond.
20Procedure Place the tripods two yards apart on a
level surface. Press the ON switch to turn the
unit on. The digital readout will say bAd if the
unit and reflector are not aligned. Adjust the
tripod until the unit reads GOOD for a brief time
and then changes to read ProA. This means the
athlete can enter the beam between the stands. As
the athlete enters the beam the digital readout
changes to - - - - (four dashes) across the
screen.
The coach pushes the red reset button and the
readout says GO, this indicates the timer is
ready and the athlete is in the correct position.
Note The timer cant be reset if the next
athlete is standing in the beam.
21When the athlete is ready he runs to the right 5
yards and touches the line with the right hand.
(As he leaves the beam the readout reads GOnE).
As he comes back through the beam the timer will
record the 10 yard time. He continues on with the
drill running to the left five yards. He touches
the line with his left hand and returns through
the beam. The timer then records the overall Pro
Agility time. Note The athlete faces the same
direction throughout the test. Do not turn
circles.
The timer allows the coach to toggle back and
forth to see the two times. The time will
disappear only when the timer is reset.
The athlete is normally allowed one run for
testing. If the athlete slips it is the coaches
discretion to give them another run. When testing
is completed turn the unit off to save battery
power.
22Note Instruct the athletes not to touch the
start button until they are ready to hold it
down. If the athlete should lift their hand off
the start switch but decide not to run instruct
them to press the button again which will
register a false time and allow the coach to
press the reset button on the timer unit.
This procedure will enable the system to be ready
to time.
23The 10 Yard Dash was impossible to time with hand
held stop watches so coaches could only time 40
yards.
10 Yard Dash timing was not possible until the
invention of electronic timers and even then some
electronic timers were not accurate enough to use
for a test that can be under two seconds. The
EPIC 10 or 40 Timer is precise to better than one
millisecond accuracy. The Epic Timer utilizes
advanced dedicated hardware (not software) for
its timing elements and employs a highly accurate
20.000 megahertz digital oscillator and two
precision 32.678 kilohertz crystals as the
cornerstone for its frequency control. The 10 or
40 Yard Timer can be used indoors or outdoors.
This timer records one time for each run. If you
are looking to record the 10 and 40 in the same
run or do more complex timing you need the
Ultimate Timer.
24Tape down the start switch. Position the tripod
stands at the 10 yard finish line six feet apart.
Turn the timer unit on and the readout will
indicate GOOD for a brief time then switch to
read 10 if the unit and reflector are aligned.
This means the unit is ready to time. If the
stands are not aligned the unit will readout - -
- - (four dashes). Align the stands to read 10.
When the athlete presses the button down on the
start switch, the unit will show - - - - (four
dashes). When they release the button the unit
will say GONE. When they break the beam at 10
yards the unit will display their time. After
the Coach records the time he pushes the reset
button to ready the timer for the next athlete.
Procedure Athlete places thumb on starting
switch. Both feet must be behind the start
line. Athlete starts when he/she is ready. The
timer starts automatically when the athletes
hand leaves the start switch. Athlete is
allowed one official attempt. The time is
recorded when the athlete breaks the beam. Time
is recorded to the nearest tenth of a second

26Software
- The Talent Identification Index is for high
school coaches that want the index points. They
are not planning to become EPIC Directors. They
do not want to participate in the EPIC Combines.
They want to use the index points for their own
athletes without charging them a fee. Most
collegiate coaches would fit in this category. As
a result the Talent Identification Index is
included in the Collegiate Test Package. Testing
allows coaches to determine if their programs are
working. By re-testing after 4 weeks it is easy
to see where progress has been made and if goals
have been achieved. It includes Performance Tests
and Strength Tests. -
27- The Vertical Jump Index provides the index points
for the vertical jump only. The Vertical Jump
Index is great for identifying talent. Converting
test scores to points makes it easy for athletes
and parents to compare with other athletes. Most
coaches will prefer the Talent Identification
Index because it includes index scores for
strength and performance tests. -
The Strength Disk helps coaches set lifting
poundage and monitor progress for all of their
athletes on every set of every exercise.
A Help File is provided online at epicindex.com
A copy of the Path to Athletic Power is included
with the Strength Disk and the program is
pre-loaded on the Strength Disk to help a coach
get started.
28 Books
- Between 1969 and 2003 thousands of high school
and college programs worldwide benefited from the

Nebraska. At that time Husker Power was
recognized as the most successful strength and
conditioning program in history. EPIC is proud to
offer these unedited versions of the Husker Power
program exactly as they were printed.

34Nutrition
- Well-nourished athletes do better in sports,
recover more quickly from unavoidable injuries,
and derive more performance-improving benefits
from long and strenuous training sessions.
35Nutrition - Hydration
- Hydration
- Gator Whey was designed to both replenish fluid
and electrolytes lost during training and promote
anabolic responses by delivering whey protein in
small, easy to digest amounts. This carefully
designed, potent combination of ingredients gives
your body the nutrients you need to both
replenish and build muscle.
36Nutrition - Recovery
RTM
RM5
- Recovery
- After a workout there is a small window of
opportunity to replace nutrients used in workouts
to speed recovery. A liquid meal for consumption
after training will help ensure adequate
substrate and nutrient availability in the blood.
- The two pound container has been upgraded to the
RTM Case which contains twenty 2 oz. RTMs. The
athlete can carry one RTM in their gym bag to
take after the workout each day. Also great for
breakfast or a quick lunch. The five pound
container is for athletes wanting to gain weight.
2 oz - RTM
5 lb. RM5
37Nutrition Multi-vitamins
Multi-vitamins This product provides faster, more
efficient absorption than the common pill forms
due to its PH Balanced delivery method.
- This method not only allows more efficient
absorption, but also allows protection of the
vitamins from damage due to the buffered solution
and quick gastric dumping. This dumping takes the
nutrients out of the acidic environment of the
stomach and enters them into the duodenum, where
absorption into the intestinal walls can begin.
The absorption is quick and easy, as the
ingredients were broken down and ready for
absorption in the glass before consuming. Once in
the bloodstream, these nutrients are easily
transported where they are needed within the
framework of the body.
38Nutrition - Advanced
- Creatine Edge is for athletes that have been
training and are having trouble making weight or
strength gains. This advanced approach is not for
beginners just starting a lifting program.
This efficient absorption eliminates the common
gastrointestinal distress typically caused by
creatine monohydrate when the stomach attempts to
dissolve the compound into a free creatine,
absorbable ion.
A balanced strength and conditioning program is
also needed for the Creatine Edge to work
properly.
