Title: Organizational Patterns

1
Organizational Patterns
  • Using Transitions to Connect Ideas together

2
What are transitions?
  • Help show relationships between ideas in writing
  • Establish a structure or pattern that the
    reader can follow
  • Helps ideas flow from one to another

3
Transition Usage
  • Depending on the type of writing youre doing,
you need different transitions for different
    purposes.
  • Some purposes include
  • Similarity/Contrast (double-bubble)
  • Time sequence/order (flow)
  • Cause and effect (multi-flow)
  • Position, emphasis, relationship, additional
    information (bridge or circle)

4
Examples of Transitions
  • John skipped meals regularly. Therefore, he was
    always hungry.
  • The transitional word Therefore helps connect
and show the relationship between skipping
    meals and always being hungry.

5
Missing Transitions
  • It was an unusually cold spring. The trees were
    leafing out.
  • Which transition fits best here? Remember, trees
dont start to leaf until it gets warm.
  • Most transitions that show contrast would work,
such as however, surprisingly, in spite of.

6
Misplaced Transitions
  • Walt never cleaned out the inside of his car.
Nevertheless, it smelled and looked horrible!
  • This transition makes no sense. It suggests a
contrast when no contrast is called for. Heres
    a revision
  • Walt never cleaned out the inside of his car.
Consequently, it smelled and looked horrible.
