14Red Tide
15In addition to sickening or killing fish, red
tides often kill manatees, whales, dolphins, and
sea birds. Even humans can become deathly ill.

20Can cost upwards of 20 million to control red
tide outbreaks (reduced fishing, tourism, etc.).
Off the Florida coast, workers shoot a special
clay into the water to control the growth of
algae and red tide.
21 How FLORIDA PHOSPHATIC CLAY works to control RED
TIDE When added to the seawater, the clay
particles attaches to each other and to
microscopic organisms like the red tide algae,
eventually growing into aggregate particles that
settle to the ocean bottom. If they settle deep
enough and are not resuspended or don't escape,
the organisms die.
