Title: SAFE TOWER
1SAFE TOWER
- Modern Control Tower Consoles with VCCS, AWOS and
DIVOS Recorder Successfully installed in Lagos,
Abuja and Port Harcourt while Kano installation
is pending till the construction of a new Control
Tower is completed
2Total VHF Coverage of the Airspace
- Project Background Rapidly increasing volume of
air traffic in the airspace - Objective To guarantee the safety of the flying
public throughout the duration of every flight - Status Contract awarded to Park Air Systems, UK
3NIGERIA FIR AND SECTORS ADJACENT FIRS
4AIS AUTOMATION ON TRACON IMPLEMENTATION

12Others features
- Spares
- Training
- On-the Job Technology Transfer
13Alternative Sources of Power/Electromechanical
Systems
- Generators
- Solar Power
- UPS
- Inverters
- VAC Ventilation and Air Conditioning
14Power Supply to Safety-Critical Air Navigation
Aids
- FAAN is vested with the statutory duties to
provide power - NAMA has been providing alternative power due to
FAAN not meeting up with the challenge of power
15Power Requirements
- Three Generators required for locations that
solely depend on Generators - Locations that have FAAN secondary power supply
requires two Generators - Locations that have primary power source from
PHCN and secondary power from FAAN requires
atleast one standby Generator - In addition, all locations require appropriate
UPS with surge protectors and other protective
devices
16Fuel Supply for Generators
- Consumption matrix based on fuel requirements for
stations indicates that quarterly consumption of
AGO and PMS is on the average of 28,000Ltr and
27,000Ltr respectively - The cost is implication of the above is enormous
- Budgetary provision should be made to support
these requirements
17HUMAN CAPITAL DEVELOPMENT
- ATSEP Licensing programme
- Rapid factory training on TRACON, Safe Tower and
VSAT network embarked on in the last 3 years - Over 70 engineers have been trained overseas on
the various subsystems above - Other overseas and local courses are embarked on
annually based on budgetary provisions - These trainings are capital intensive
-
18Challenges and Constraints
- Due process and other procurement related delays
leading to contract variation - Clearing of goods at ports
- Logistics of managing multi-site projects
- Weak matrix project environment
- Power outage that affects CNS facilities leading
to downtime and high cost of maintenance - Keeping up with modern trends in the highly
dynamic and technology driven aviation industry
19Conclusion
- The trend worldwide is to run organizations that
have the capacity to self-sustain however
considering the decay and neglect of the past
years, total support is required from the
Government for us to attain this height in future
