Title: One Laptop Per Child

1
  • One Laptop Per Child
  • An Education project for the poorest children of
    the world
  • It's an education project, not a laptop
    project.
  • Nicholas Negroponte

2
Mission
  • To create educational opportunities for the
world's poorest children by providing each child
    with a rugged, low-cost, low-power, connected
laptop with content and software designed for
    collaborative, joyful, self-empowered learning.

3
  • Twobillion children in the developing world are
inadequately educated, or receive no education at
all. One in three does not complete the fifth
    grade.
  • The individual and societal consequences of this
    chronic global crisis poverty spiral
  • Governments struggle and lacks the tools to
resolve this problem of the digital divide
  • Standing still is a reliable recipe for going
    backward

4
It is time to rethink this equation
  • developing countries allocate to education lt 20
    per year per pupil
  • compared to 7500 in the U.S.even a doubled or
redoubled would not get the job done
  • incremental increase of building more schools,
more teachers, buying more books and equipment
    will not be sufficient

5
  • Our answer to that challenge is the XO laptop, a
    children's machine designed for learning
    learning
  • XO embodies the theories of constructionism first
developed by MIT Media Lab Professor Seymour
Papert in the 1960s, and later elaborated upon by
    Alan Kay
  • constructionism emphasizes learning learning as
    the fundamental educational experience
  • XO laptop designed to allow children to think
about thinking, in ways that are otherwise
    impossible
  • Using it as window to the world, and a highly
programmable tool for exploring it, children in
emerging nations will be opened to both
illimitable knowledge and to their own creative
    and problem-solving potential.

6
XO unlike any laptop ever built
7
  • Creates own mesh network - children and their
teachers and families -will be connected both to
one another and to the Internet
  • Two display modes a transmissive, full-color
mode, and a reflective black and white mode that
    is sunlight readable
  • very little power 0.2 2W
  • free and open-source software unlimited supply
    of contents and software upgrades
  • Water-proof, dust proof, drop proof

8
Benefits
  • Learning is our main goal we do not focus on
    computer literacy
  • Young children do not need to learn about IT
  • We believe children learn best through doing
  • OLPC puts an emphasis on software tools for
exploring and expressing, rather than instruction
  • engaging children in constructing knowledge based
    upon their personal interests
  • providing them tools for sharing and critiquing
these constructions will lead them to become
    learners and teachers

9
interface
  • user-interface tailored to young children
    learning
  • Graphical User Interface shows fellow learners
and teachers as collaborators and connecting them
    to their activities

exploring
The laptop gives learners opportunities they have
not had before. Tools such as a Web browser, rich
media player, and e-book reader bring into
reach domains of knowledge that are otherwise
difficult-or impossible-for children to access.
12
expressing
  • The laptop helps children build upon their active
interest in the world around them to engage with
    powerful ideas.
  • Tools for writing, composing, simulating,
    expressing, constructing, designing, modeling,
    imagining, creating, critiquing, debugging, and
collaborating enable children to become positive,
    contributing members of their communities.

13
learning
  • The laptop takes learners beyond instruction.
They are actively engaged in a process of
    learning through doing.
  • Children also learn by teaching, actively
    assisting other learners.

14
resources
  • The laptop not only delivers the world to
children, but also brings the best practices of
children and their teachers to the world. Each
school represents a learning hub a node in a
    globally shared resource for learning.

Going forward
  • The XO laptops started to roll out in quantities
from the beginning of this year and we are
implementing learning programs in a number of
    countries already.
  • With the establishment of OLPC Asia Pacific, a
non-profit organisation being established in Hong
Kong, we plan to take our mission to China and
other parts of Asia Pacific to reach the most
    needy children in these countries.

22
  • we are mindful that there are many differences in
the culture and education systems in this part of
    the world.
  • need to collaborate as much as possible with the
local educational institutes and the local
community and develop an OLPC learning platform
locally to suit their own requirements.
  • Local language contents
  • Local education portal for the XOs
  • e-book library thousands of books for each
    child
  • School administration system
  • Teachers collaboration among different schools
  • Local hardware and software developments
  • Local OLPC wiki community

23
  • A starting platform that plants the seeds of our
mission, to create educational opportunities for
the world's poorest children by providing each
    child with a rugged, low-cost, low-power,
connected laptop with content and software
    designed for collaborative, joyful,
    self-empowered learning.
