The problem of the black cloud
The predicted waste amount of Egypts population
3Types of wastes
- Main types of wastes which include Solid and
Liquid wastes.
Some wastes are more harmful because they contain
heavy metals
4Wadi Digla Protected Area
Wadi Digla was declared as a Protected Area in
1999, with an area of 60 km2. It is desert land
located 10 km away from Cairo.
Biodiversity
-At least 12 species of birds typical of the
Eastern Desert have been found.
-At least 20 species of reptiles are known from
Wadi Degla.
-Over 75 wild flowering plants have been recorded.

8Caper and the problem of waste disposal
Disposal of plastic wastes in the wadi
Heavy metals cause toxicity, cancer and death to
man
Accumulation of plastic bags over and around
caper bushes
Plant eaten by animals or man, or used by Bedouin
for treatment of rheumatoid
Absorption of heavy metals from soil by the plant
root system
Decay of plastic and precipitation of heavy
metals in soil
9Effect of waste disposal on tourism
Conclusion, goals and suggested solutions
The Cairo Governorate should take positive steps
to achieve three main goals
- The first goal is to eliminate all the
accumulated wastes from the protectorate.
- The second goal is to move the recycling
activity based within or near the protectorate to
another area.
- The third goal is to encourage local people,
NGOs and students to visit the wadi and help to
remove the wastes.
10What can we do
Reduce use of plastic bags and bottles
Separate plastic waste at home
Recycle plastic bags and bottles
