Definition

• How cells make energy (ATP) without oxygen or low
  oxygen
• Anaerobic
• Glycolysis still happens to make 2 ATP
• But there is no Krebs Cycle or ETC
• 2 Types
• Lactic Acid Fermentation
• Alcoholic Fermentation

Lactic Acid Fermentation

• Muscle cells in animals
• When oxygen is low muscles become sore during
  exercise because there is not enough ATP -
  Fatigue

• Glucose is converted to 2 pyruvates and makes 2
  ATP and 2 NADH
• GLYCOLYSIS
• Pyruvate is converted to Lactic Acid
• Happens in the cytoplasm

Alcoholic Fermentation

• Used by yeast and some bacteria cells to make
  ethyl alcohol and CO2
• Wine
• Beer
• Makes the holes in bread, any alcohol made burns
  off
• Cheese, buttermilk, yogurt, and vinegar
