    EXPRESS/UML
  • How?
  • Overview of metamodel of the EXPRESS language
  • Issues on metamodel
  • Next steps

3
Why?
  • Part 25 Edition 1 EXPRESS-to-UML 1.5 supported
    UML tooling use by implementations
  • Plan was to create enable EXPRESS modelling using
UML tools by defining a UML Profile of EXPRESS
    in Part 25 Edition 2
  • New OMG standards have emerged
  • UML 2 and MOF 2
  • Model Driven Architecture
  • Ontology Definition Metamodel
  • Plans have changed

4
Some OMG background
  • MOF is Meta-Object Facility
  • A model for describing modeling languages
  • There is a MOF model of UML
  • A set of APIs for a repository of models
  • MDA is Model Driven Architecture
  • Very similar to STEP ARM/Mapping/AIM ideas
  • Everything depends on there being a MOF model of
    the languages being used
  • QVT is QueryViewTransform
  • The in-process OMG standard roughly equivalent to
    STEP mapping tables and/or EXPRESS-X

5
Some OMG background (2)
  • ODM Ontology Definition Metamodel
  • MOF model and mapping between
  • OWL
  • RDF Schema
  • ISO 24707 Common Logic
  • Topic Maps
  • Entity-Relationship

6
Metamodel Overview
  • Overview being delivered
  • at ISO SC4 Valencia by David Price
  • At OMG Boston next week by Ed Barkmeyer

7
Subset of interest to SC4 Community
  • Issue log 2005-06-09

8
Related Results
  • Creating the metamodel resulted in detailed
review of Part 11 by Ed Barkmeyer and a series of
    SEDS issues being raised
  • WG11 exploder discussions on-going
  • Allison Feeney will be editor of Part 11 TC
  • also editing the metamodel working closely with
    Ed at NIST

9
Next steps of interest to SC4
  • Publish draft for comment
  • UML/HTML documentation published on Web
  • Typical 30 day review period announced on WG11
    exploder
  • Resolve issues
  • Test via prototype implementation and test
    populations
  • Publish Draft from upon which OMG standard will
    be based
