About US
  • Since 1938, Lorain Metropolitan Housing
    Authority (LMHA) has provided decent, safe and
    affordable housing for the low-income citizens of
    Lorain County. Federally subsidized through the
    Department of Housing and Urban Development, the
    Housing Authority's Public Housing Program and
    the Section 8 Program provide housing subsidy in
    a variety of apartments giving low income
    individuals the opportunity to live in dignity
    while paying an affordable rent.As the largest
    landlord in Lorain County LMHA has achieved its
    original focus to provide decent, safe and
    affordable housing for low income residents. LMHA
    strives to partner with local agencies to provide
    programs and activities to enrich the lives of
    its residents youth, adults, elderly and
    physically challenged. Satisfied residents are
    the business of Lorain Metropolitan Housing
    Authority.

LMHA OFFERS TWO HOUSING PROGRAMS
  • PUBLIC HOUSING - WHERE LMHA IS THE LANDLORD.
    PARTICIPANTS RENT UNITS IN DESIGNATED AREAS
  • TENANT BASED SECTION 8 PARTICIPANTS CHOOSE
    UNITS OWEND BY PRIVATE OWNERS WHO ARE WILLING TO
    PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM.

Public Housing Family Developments
  • Family developments consist of 779 units located
    in Lorain, Elyria, and Oberlin.
  • Eligible applicants pay 30 of their adjusted
    income toward rent. Residents in family
    developments are responsible for payment of gas
    and electricity

Public Housing Elderly Disabled
  • Elderly and Disabled Highrise buildings consists
    of 862 units located in Amherst, Lorain, Elyria,
    and Oberlin.
  • Eligible applicants pay 30 of their adjusted
    income toward rent. All utilities are provided in
    the high rise units. High rise residents are
    responsible to pay their own telephone and cable
    television services.

PUBLIC HOUSING APPLICATIONS
  • Applications for Public Housing are accepted
    Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 900 a.m.
    to 300 p.m.

Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8)
  • The HCV program currently has 2600 participants.
  • Participants are responsible for locating a unit
    and can be housed anywhere in Lorain County.
  • Eligible participants pay 30 of their adjusted
    income toward rent.
  • Utilities are the responsibility of the
    participants unless otherwise stated in the lease
    between the participant and the landlord.

Housing Choice Voucher Applications
  • Applications for the HCV (Section 8) Program
    are accepted Tuesdays and Thursdays from 900
    a.m. to 1100 a.m. and 100 p.m. to 300 p.m.

Applications for both programs may be picked up
at the front desk anytime during regular business
hours (Monday thru Friday 800 a.m. to 400 p.m.)
at the main offices of LMHA, 1600 Kansas Ave.,
Lorain. Applications for both programs describe
the requirements necessary for each program.

LMHA also offers participants programs to help
them become self-sufficient.
  • The Family Self-Sufficiency program is offered by
    both Public Housing and Section 8.
  • The FSS program encourages participants to work
    towards the goal of become self-sufficient.
  • A contract is drawn up between LMHA and the
    participant with specific goals set by the
    participant. As the participant reaches these
    goals, if changes occur in their earned income
    and their portion of the rent increases, an
    escrow account is established in their name. The
    difference between the assistance payment before
    and after the changes determine the amount
    deposited into this account.
  • They are able to receive these funds at the end
    of their contract or when they have reached their
    goals.

Housing Choice Voucher Homeownership Option
Program
  • Participants on the Section 8 program are
    eligible to become part of the HCV Homeownership
    Option Program.
  • This program promotes homeownership for minority
    and low income families.
  • The HCVHO Program assists the families with their
    mortgage payment until the family becomes
    self-sufficient or a maximum of 15 years (no
    maximum for elderly and disabled participants).
