Title: Revival Project Work Package 07
1Revival Project -Work Package 07
Daneshill House Stevenage
Progress Report Six Florence May 2006
2REVIVAL STEVENAGE
- Night Cooling using thermal mass PCM
- Partial Night Cooling using thermal mass PCM
- Energy Efficient Lighting controls
- Low Energy Lighting Controls
- Solar Collection System for domestic hot water
- Control Alterations to Existing AC Plant
- Associated project works
- Winter Ventilation to Old Block
- Replacement of Under floor Electric Heating to
Old Block - Overall aim to demonstrate Co2 reduction of 50
compared to existing building.
3REVIVAL STEVENAGE
- Delivery Context of Stevenage Work Packages
- The 14 Stevenage work packages are being
delivered as part of Phased programme of
refurbishment of an occupied public building. - They are part of 8 individual refurbishment
projects with different funding and timescales. - The 8 projects have a total value of 2.35m
- (3.3m Euros)
- The Revival financial contribution is 48k
- (67,000 Euros) 2

6REVIVAL STEVENAGE
Problem Encountered in last reporting period
- Tenders for current phase of works (including 4th
floor new block) were 996k against budget
available of 756k - Council decided to omit 5th floor old block from
current phase of works.
7REVIVAL STEVENAGE
- Atrium Energy Efficient Controls
- The control alterations to the ground first
floor Atrium areas are now completed final
commissioning under cooling load conditions will
take place in May 2006. - Energy monitoring under the improved system will
take place during summer 2006.
8REVIVAL STEVENAGE
Old Block Summer Cooling Energy Efficient
Lighting Works
- Work on 3rd floor summer cooling lighting
controls will start on site in May 2006 - Work will include the Squid top up mechanical
cooling units.

14REVIVAL STEVENAGE
- Detailed design completed and scheme out to
tender. - Vacuum tube type solar panels have been selected
- Completion of installation due Summer 2006
15REVIVAL STEVENAGE
- Existing water heating using 25.9MWh/year
- Current emissions 11,148kg/CO2/year
- New emissions 3,302kg (Reduction 66)
- New solar water heating to include Gas auxiliary
heater

20REVIVAL STEVENAGE
Winter Ventilation to Old Block
- To provide acceptable winter ventilation to the
old block, a system of Co2 controlled radiators
is being installed. - The system is called oXygen manufactured by
Jaga of Belgium - 6 radiators are being installed as part of the
3rd floor project
21REVIVAL STEVENAGE
- System has Co2 controls and can also be used in
summer to provide controlled ventilation within
the passive cooled area
22REVIVAL STEVENAGE
Phase Change Material Issues
- Workshop held in November to discuss issue raised
at London meeting over PCM service life. - Workshop looked at PCM sample from 6th floor with
330 actives cycles since 2002
23REVIVAL STEVENAGE
PCM Workshop Findings
- No physical signs of change evident in the 2002
installed samples examined - Future on site PCM temp. monitoring should be
taken in middle of material. (New probe
temperature sensor has been obtained tested) - 2002 samples require retesting off site.
(Climator subsequently retested 2002 samples in
factory) Independent testing needed - No definitive view was expressed over whether to
use C24 or C22 in next phase. - (Goran Head considers the difference cannot be
measured)
24REVIVAL STEVENAGE
PCM Development
- PCM manufacturing process has changed
- Now smaller, vacuumed sealed packets
- Increased capacity for same volume
- Implications for CoolDeck System
- Greater surface area airflow disruption which
may improve efficiency - Two full plate PCM samples have been produced
tested on 6th floor (some slight increase in
system noise was evident)
25REVIVAL STEVENAGE
- Single CoolDeck plate with new format PCM
Modules
