3Literacy hour was introduced countrywide in 1998
in Britain to improve levels of literacy.
Its based on the premise that literacy is taught
for an hour a day, five days a week.
The hour is divided up into four sections
4- First section (15 minutes)
- the objectives of the lesson are made clear
- whole class teaching e.g. modelling reading
using an enlarged text or modelling writing by
scribing with the class.
- Second section (15 minutes)
- whole class teaching breaking down the text to
focus on word or sentence work
5- Third section (about 20 minutes)
- group or individual work reading, writing or
word and sentence work while the teacher works
with one or more group on guided text work.
- Final section (about 10 minutes)
- whole class plenary session review the
learning that has taken place related to the
learning objectives of the lesson the pupils,
not the teacher, explain what they have learnt.

different levels

- language related to specific characters

10Objectives for each year have been drawn up on a
termly basis and divided into the three
categories.
- e.g. Year 1 term 2
- Phonological awareness, phonics and spelling
- to secure spelling and reading of initial,
medial and final letter sounds in simple words
