Title: 3rd GPM Workshop, Day 2 Afternoon 25 June

1
3rd GPM Workshop, Day 2 Afternoon (25 June)
Session III Algorithms, Validations
Applications Chairman V. Levizzani (CNR,
Italy) Rapporteur S. Satoh (NASDA, Japan)
2
  • Algorithm
  • (1) MWR algorithm
  • - A-priori database
  • - TB Calibration Standard
  • - Precipitation retrieval over land
  • (2) Radar algorithm
  • - Dual-frequency algorithm will provide DSD in
    a rainfall range (2-15 mm/hr)
  • Science Working Group for algorithm (JGST?)

3
2. Validation (1) Supersite for GV -
Minimum requirement comprehensive instruments
(MP-radar, WP, etc) to measure DSD especially
- Location in the climatic regions ltUS,
Japan, Europe, Canada, Australia, Brazilgt -
Coordination between different supersites (2)
Utilization of ground-based radar network -
US, EU, Canada, Russia(?) and other countries
4
3. Assimilation (1) TB assimilation for
operation - Precipitation assimilation is
also possible, but uncertain retrieval error may
be included (2) Importance of Microphysics for
research - DSD effect on data assimilation
(CRM)
5
4. Applications (1) Climatology - DSD
distribution has an impact on results of GCM
(2) Hydrology - Uncertainties of
space-time intermittency - Accurate
precipitation estimates over land - Flood
forecast
6
  • Summary
  • DSD is a key to success of the GPM
  • About partnership, there are few borders in
    Science (algorithm validation group)
  • However, we need more communication and
    discussion between science (algorithm
    validation) group and application group

Session III Algorithms, Validations
Applications
Answer to related seed questions Objective 1 To
consolidate the results of the first two
planning workshops Q1-1. What is the status of
the retrieval algorithm developments? Q1-2. What
is the status of the potential data validators
and validation sites? Objective 2 To establish
/ expand world-wide partnership Q2-1. What roles
do meteorological and international organisations
play in this partnership? Q2-2. How should
algorithm developers and data validators in
universities and research laboratories be
integrated into the partnership? Objective 3 To
seek support of the wider user community Q3-1.
What are the emerging application areas for GPM
data? Q3-2. Are there further potential areas of
applications? Objective 4 To agree on course of
actions for mission implementation Q4-1. Are the
priorities for the next course of actions clear
and what are those priorities? Q4-2. What is the
next milestone?
