Title: Dwayne

1
Dwayne
Dwayne is a post-16 learner taking the Advanced
Diploma in hospitality. When at school Dwayne
often helped out at school plays, sports days and
open evenings, generally helping make sure that
parents knew where to go, where to park and so
on. He always enjoyed working with people (he is
a good talker!) and likes the idea of working in
a job where he has regular contact with customers
of all ages. He thought the Advanced Diploma in
hospitality would give him the opportunity to
explore the sort of jobs he may be suited to and
experience the hospitality industry at first hand
to make sure it was for him. Dwayne also has
an ambition to run his own training school for
people wanting to work in the hospitality
industry. To help with this he decided to study A
level business studies as his additional and
specialist learning in order to understand more
about the world of business.

Extended Project
At the launch he was asked to look after the
mayor before her opening speech and although he
was nervous did a great job. He also led a small
team tasked with meeting and greeting other VIP
guests and made sure everyone was in the right
place at the right time. At the end of the work
experience Dwayne was even more convinced that a
career in hospitality was for him!
Dwayne set up a training programme for younger
pupils who helped out at school events. He
researched existing training and thought back to
the advice given to him about good customer
care. He also spent some time observing a range
of staff dealing with customers in different
venues to see how well they managed
relationships. He prepared a report afterwards,
preparing draft training programmes for each
member of staff as a result of evaluating
existing training courses and amending them in
light of his observations. They also took into
account the individual needs of the staff
concerned. All the information contributed to the
training programme which his old school now use
with pupils in the school before they help out at
events.
Dwayne was really pleased to be offered a period
of work experience at the local arts centre,
helping out the reception staff and assisting
the education officer who did guided tours of the
centre to visitors from schools and
colleges. Dwayne soon felt at ease at the centre
and asked if he could help with the design of the
leaflet they were preparing to send into schools
outlining how a visit to the arts centre could
help the pupils with their school work. Dwayne
was also asked if he would be prepared to help
out in reception at the launch of a new
exhibition of paintings by a local artist.
