Virginia

• backcountry opened up beyond the Blue Ridge
  mountains
• Governor Berkeley made arrangement with Native
  Americans

• Promised to keep settlers from pushing farther
• Bacons Rebellion
• Nathaniel Bacon others opposed government
• Resented pledge to stay out of NA territory
• Moved there anyway, then blamed Jamestown for not
  protecting them
• Bacon and others attack Native American villages
• Marched to Jamestown, burned capital

Maryland

• Founded 1632
• Granted to George Calvert, Lord Baltimore, a
  Catholic
• Son, Cecil, inherited
• Baltimore became largest settlement and port
• Large plantations were established, requiring
  workers
• Indentured servants
• Enslaved Africans
• Mason-Dixon Line
• Grew out of argument between Calvert family and
  Penn family as to boundary
• Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon hired to map
  line
• Laid out boundary stones with Penn crest on one
  side and Calvert crest on other
• Act of Toleration
• Law created in 1649 granting Protestants and
  Catholics right to worship freely.
• Repealed in 1692

The Carolinas

• Founded 1663 as one large colony to 8 prominent
  members of King Charles II court
• City of Charles Town (later Charleston) founded
  by 1680
• John Locke, English political philosopher, wrote
  constitution
• Concerned with principles and rights
• every man has a property in his own person.
  This nobody has any right to but himself. The
  labour of his body, and the work of his hands, we
  may say, are properly his
• Because of too many differences, the Carolinas
  split into two colonies and became two colonies
  in 1729

North Carolina

• Economy mainly tobacco and forest products
• Relied heavily on Virginias ports and merchants

South Carolina

• Economy more prosperous due to fertile farmland
  and good harbor
• Began to grow rice in 1680s
• Required much labor
• Demand for slaves increased
• Growing Indigo started in 1740s
• Blue flower which is used for blue dye
• Became blue gold of South Carolina

Georgia

• Founded in 1733
• General James Oglethorpe received charter
• Place for debtors and poor to make fresh start
• Banned slavery, Catholics, and rum
• British used it as protection for other colonies
  against Spanish attack
