4A Brief History of Statistical Consulting at UCR
Initial Leadership for a Statistical Consulting
Laboratory was from Department of Statistics
Beginning around 1994 with efforts of Prof.
David Strauss (Emeritus), Prof. Keh-Shin Lii and
Prof. Robert Beaver (Emeritus). Their efforts
were were unofficial, in a volunteer mode
motivated largely by a sense of Professional
Responsibility. Idea conceived in 2001 for an
Official Director of a Statistical Consulting
Collaboratory with joint support from College of
Natural and Agricultural Sciences, College of
Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences and the
Office of Computing and Communications. A
faculty line position that included
responsibilities to provide the leadership for
growing the initiative in terms of client
development and student involvement was provided
to the Department of Statistics.
5A Brief History of Statistical Consulting at UCR
Funds were provided by CHASS and CC to fund the
salary and benefits of a M.S. level Statistician
and to be the Manager of the Collaboratory, and
to support software license fees. CHASS interest
is motivated by wanting the physical presence of
the Collaboratory in Sproul Hall, and having a
statistically trained Manager available to
consult with clients in the lab. CC interest is
motivated by wanting to elevate the level of
statistical computing and data analysis on the
campus. Director of Collaboratory was appointed
in Fall of 2003 and the Manager position was
filled in Spring of 2004.
