What did we learn?
  • ALL groups responded that the most effective way
    for police to connect with youth and the
    community was through the schools.
  • YET
  • Schools reported a wide range in the level of
    police involvement and activities.

School Resource Officer Pilot Project
  • On going since 2003 in Eastern Kings County,
    P.E.I.
  • The main focus is to
  • - educate youth on a number of relevant safety
    issues
  • - foster positive relationships between youth
    and the RCMP
  • - help youth develop a better understanding of
    the roles of the RCMP
  • - increase awareness among youth of an
    individual's responsibility to the community and
  • - provide youth with the knowledge/confidence
    needed to make safe and responsible choices.

Conclusions October, 2006
  • Increased visibility and accessibility of RCMP
    within schools
  • Developed positive relationships between RCMP and
    staff, students, and parents associated with
    schools
  • Increased comfort levels with students and school
    staff

  • Ensured youth and school issues are being dealt
    with in a timely and effective manner
  • Provided students with valuable information on
    safety issues and crime prevention concepts
  • Increased understanding among students of the
    role of RCMP/police
  • Created a more positive relationship between
    students and RCMP/police

    Resource Officer program among government,
    community organizations, parents, and community
    members
  • Developed relationships with several relevant
    government sectors and community organizations
  • Decreased the number of calls Souris RCMP
    detachments receive from schools/regarding youth

    collaboration with Souris RCMP detachment
