Title: Empirical Formula Lab

1
Empirical Formula Lab
  • Day 1 Start data

2
Prepare Materials
  • Clean dry 100-150 mL beaker label with station
    -period
  • For example 4th period, station 7 ? 7-4
  • 50 mL beaker to get acid
  • Zero balance (if necessary)

3
Tare mass beaker
  • Mass clean, dry beaker after labeled
  • Record using correct of sig figs

4
Zinc Me!
  • With beaker on balance
  • Add one gram to mass and ask to be zinced!
  • Once zinc has been added, remass and record as
    gross mass.

5
Add acid
  • Goggle up!
  • Use the 50 mL beaker to obtain 20 mL of acid
following directions for using reagent bottles
  • Pour into 100-150 mL beaker
  • Carry beaker to fume hood and
    place on class hotplate.

6
Data 1-5 show work
  • 1. Gross mass . g
  • 2. Tare mass . g
  • 3. Net mass (1-2) . g
  • 4. moles of zinc sf moles
  • 3 g x 1 mole sf moles
  • p. table g
  • 5. atoms of zinc sf atoms
  • 4 moles x ??? atoms sf atoms
  • 1 mole

7
Day 2
  • Finish data calculations

8
Data
  • Labeled beaker will be delivered to your station
  • White dry zinc chloride (zinc
    chlorine)
  • Mass beaker
  • Clean leave at station

9
Calculations
  • 7. Dry zinc chloride (6-2) . g
  • 8. Mass of chlorine (7-3) . g
  • 9. Moles of chlorine sf mols
  • 8 g x 1 mole sf moles
  • p. table g
  • 10. Atoms of chlorine sf atoms
  • 9 moles x ??? atoms sf atoms
  • 1 mole

10
Calculations
  • 11. Ratio (zinc should be smaller amount of
    moles) 9/4 sf
  • 12. Ratio (10/5) sf
  • 13. Empirical Formula
  • ZnCl?
  • 11 12 andnearest whole ?

11
Finishing Touches
  • Double check sig figs units
  • Make sure work is shown
  • Lab station and partners names
