Classroom Management
  • All of the things teachers do to organize
    students, space, time and materials to maximize
    effective teaching and student learning
  • Research has shown effectively managed classrooms
    and high student achievement are linked.

  • Enhance student involvement and cooperation
  • Establish a positive working environment

12 steps
  • Howard Miller, Associate Professor of Education
    at Lincoln University (Jefferson City, Missouri)
    suggests 12 steps teachers can take at the
    beginning of the year to promote effective
    classroom management.

  • Develop a set of written expectations you can
    live with and enforce
  • Be consistent. Be consistent. Be consistent.
  • Be patient with yourself and with your students.
  • Make parents your allies. Call early and often.
    When communicating a concern, be specific and
    descriptive.

  • Dont talk too much. Use the first 15 minutes of
    class for lectures or presentations, then get the
    students working.
  • Break the class period into two or three
    different activities. Be sure each one segues
    smoothly into the next.
  • Begin at the very beginning of each class period
    and end at the very end.
  • Dont roll call. Take roll with class list while
    students are working.

  • Keep all students actively involved.
  • Discipline individual students quietly and
    privately.
  • Keep your sense of perspective AND your sense of
    humor!
  • Know when to ask for help.

Rules for making rules that work for you
  • A rule must be stated or taught clearly enough so
    that everyone affected know what is expected
  • The rule must be reasonable, meaning that the
    child can do what is expected
  • The rule must be enforceable, meaning that the
    rule maker can get the behavior to happen

  • A rule must be enforced every time it is violated
    until the desired behavior is learned
  • You must ignore irrelevant behavior.

  • Increase appropriate pro-social behaviors

Suggestions
  • Set limits for behavior by telling students your
    tolerance level.
  • Ignore behaviors that may possibly increase by
    attending to them.
  • Develop a signal to let students know behavior is
    unacceptable.
  • Reinforce students for appropriate behavior.

    to help, discussing the assignment or
    complimenting the student's accomplishment on the
    completed part of the task.
  • Make a direct appeal to the student's sense of
    fairness.
