Reflective learning
  • You probably already know your preferred method
    of learning
  • If you are a Reflector by nature you will enjoy
    learning logs
  • If you are an Activist by nature you may find it
a bit unnatural to do at first

3
In either case these are only...
4
PREFERENCES
5
We can all do so many things
6
  • "Tell me, and I will forget. Show me, and I may
remember. Involve me, and I will understand."
  • (Confucius 450 BC)

7
Kolbs learning cycle
  • A very influential model of learning
  • Developed by David Kolb in Experiential Learning
Experience as the source of learning and
    development (1984)
  • There are 4 learning processes that must be
    present for learning to occur

8
Activist
  • Active Experimentation (simulations, case study,
homework). What's new? I'm game for anything.
Enjoys problem solving, small group discussions,
peer feedback, and homework. Learns best from
someone who is model of a professional, leaving
the learner to determine her own criteria for
    relevance of materials.

9
Theorist
  • Abstract Conceptualization. Learns from lectures,
papers, analogies. Works out how things relate
to each other. Enjoys case studies, theory
readings and thinking alone almost everything
else, including talking with experts, is not
    helpful.

10
Pragmatist
  • Concrete Experience. Learns from laboratories,
field work, observations. How can I apply this
in practice? A self-directed autonomous learner
who enjoys peer feedback, activities in which
skills are used learns by having a coach/helper.

11
Reflector
  • Reflective Observation. Learns by keeping logs,
journals, brainstorming. I'd like time to think
about this. Enjoys lectures and learns from
    an expert interpretation, taskmaster/guide and
    judge.

12
Which one felt like you?
  • Or are you a mixture?

13
(No Transcript)
14
  • During the next week be aware of the ways in
which you learn and the BEST and WORST
    experiences you have
  • This will help us identify what kind of learner
    you are
  • And how you can develop or balance that through
    your project

15
Learning Logs
  • Part of your assessment is a Reflective Learning
    Journal
  • This will be easier for some learners (some of
    you) than others
  • But everyone can succeed at it

16
  • A learning log is a personal record of your own
learning. It is unique to you and will not be
the same as anyone elses. Reflecting upon your
own learning and experience is an important
aspect of your own personal and professional
    development.

17
  • A Learning Log helps you to think about,
structure, record and reflect upon your own
learning. You will almost certainly be required
to undertake a reflective process in your future
    career.

18
Whats the difference?
  • Objective
  • Write H after the sentence (for What HAPPENED)
  • Subjective
  • Write R after the sentence (for what you
    REFLECTED)

19
What happened?
  • Section 1 is a brief description of how, when,
where and with whom the learning took place.

20
Your reflection
  • Section 2 is the reflective, and the most
important, part of the log. This focuses on the
subjective experience of the learning. What did
you feel like before after and during the
learning? What changes did you experience in
    attitude, understanding analysis or synthesis?
What did you think about in relation to this
    learning?

21
What next?
  • Section 3 is the plan for change. What will you
now think, do, believe, accomplish, plan, prepare
or consider differently on the basis of this
    reflective learning?

22
Evaluation and review
  • Section 4 is the follow-up. After a length of
time (which will vary according to the level and
type of learning) return to logs and assess in
what ways your reflection has impacted on your
    practice or behaviours.
  • If it has NOT changed you, explore why this
should be and what that tells you about the
    learning.
