The Cariboo Gold Rush

• The Cariboo Gold Rush formed when miners from the
  Fraser River Gold Rush moved North to find more
  gold
• Many different miners are credited with its start
  1861, including Billy Barker
• Most miners from the Fraser River Rush moved
  North in order to take part in it
• Biggest Boom Town was Barkerville

The Cariboo Sentinel

• The Cariboo Sentinel was founded on June
• 17, 1865 by George Wallace, who was also
• the editor
• It was a wealth of information for miners and
  merchants about world news and Cariboo news
• until 1875
• It was a four page issue published every week
• Up until the 1890s it was considered the best
  source of information in the Cariboo
• The Cariboo Sentinel II is published in present
  day Barkerville for news from the past and
  activities today

The News

• Because news passed so slowly, much of the news
  could have already been many months old
• Restaurants would place ads for daily specials,
  and merchants would advertise for hotels, stores,
  or saloons
• It sold for a dollar an issue, which was fairly
  expensive (the British Colonist sold for 0.12)

The Press

• The press was initially sent from Paris to
  California to proclaim the Gospel
• One of the first presses in North America
• Was in Barkerville when it was used to publish
  the Sentinel
• Was used to print a Vancouver Island newspaper
  and a virtually unheard of French paper
