Title: Types of Forces Notes

1
Types of Forces Notes
2
Friction
  • Force exerted when two objects rub together
  • Acts in the opposite direction of the motion
  • List 3 places you see friction

3
Strength of Friction
  • Strength of friction depends on two things
  • 1. Type of materials
  • 2. How hard they rub together

4
Types of Friction
  • These are the types of friction
  • Sliding friction
  • Rolling friction
  • Fluid friction
  • Static Friction

5
Sliding Friction
  • One surface slides over another surface
  • List 3 places you might see sliding friction in
    your notes

6
Rolling Friction
  • When one object rolls over another
  • Requires less force to overcome than sliding
    friction
  • List 3 places you might see rolling friction in
    your notes

7
Fluid Friction
  • This occurs when an object travels through a
    fluid
  • A fluid is a liquid or a gas
  • Usually requires the least amount of force to
    overcome
  • List 3 places you might see fluid friction in
    your notes

8
Universal Law of Gravitation
  • Discovered by Sir Isaac Newton
  • States that gravity acts between all objects in
    the universe

9
Gravity
  • The force that pulls objects towards each other
  • The size of the objects and the distance between
them will determine the magnitude of the force

10
Falling
  • When gravity is the only force acting on an
object it is said to be in a free fall
  • It will accelerate at 9.8 m/s2 regardless of mass
    near the Earths surface

11
Projectile Motion
  • You get projectile motion when an object is
    thrown
  • Falls at the same rate as an object dropped
    straight down
  • Copy the diagrams off the board into your notes

12
Air Resistance
  • Fluid friction that slows objects as they travel
    through air
  • When air resistance force of gravity the object
reaches terminal velocity (fastest falling speed)

13
Weight vs. Mass
  • Weight force of gravity on an object
  • Mass amount of matter in an object
  • They are related by this formula weight mass X
    acceleration due to gravity
