• 1754-1763
• Between England and France in the colonies
• Native Americans were helping the French

Results of the War

• France lost much of their land in North America
• Britain had a large debt and began taxing
  colonists
• Proclamation of 1763prohibited colonists from
  settling west of the Appalachian mountains

Boston Massacre

• Many soldiers stayed behind after the French and
  Indian War
• Jobs became scarce, tensions rose
• March 5, 1770- snowball fight broke out which
  turned into a fist fight
• Mob gathered later that night to harass customs
  guards
• 5 People were killed

Boston Tea Party

• Occurred in response to the Tea Act
• Colonists (Sons of Liberty) dressed up like
  Native Americans and dumped 342 chests of tea
  into the Boston Harbor.

• Colonists boycotted goods
• They began to drink coffee instead of tea and
  spin their own cloth

  information about British threats to their

Zenger Case

• John Zenger was a journalist becoming very upset
  with England
• In 1735 he wrote negatively about the royal
  governor of NY, William Cosby
• He was arrested shortly after and found not
  guilty of treason by a jury
• Impact would lead to freedom of press

Thomas Paine

• Published a pamphlet titled Common Sense
• Tried to persuade loyalists and doubters to push
  for independence
• Wanted everyone to revolt against England and
  become their own country

Movement Towards Independence

• The 1st Continental Congress, colonists sent a
  letter to the king to demand their rights back
• King George did not respond well and thus the
  Revolution begins

Lexington and Concord

• Massachusetts April 1775
• First battle of the Revolutionary War
• Shot Heard Round the World was in Lexington on
  April 19-first shot of the war

Declaration of Independence

• Written by Thomas Jefferson during 2nd
  Continental Congress
• Explained why the colonies should be free from
  British rule
• The purpose of the government was to protect the
  people and it is based on the consent of the
  governed

John Locke

• Thomas Jefferson got many of his ideas from John
  Locke
• Second Treatise of Government
• Government should be based on a social contract
  between the people and their rulers
• People give up some freedoms and the government
  will protect the lives, liberty, and property of
  people

Independence!!!!!

• Declaration of Independence was signed and
  approved on July 4, 1776
• This declared the colonies to be free, but it did
  not come until the war was won in 1783
