3What is Phi Kappa Phi?
- Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 at the
University of Maine. - The Society is the nations oldest, largest, and
most selective all-discipline honor society. - Phi Kappa Phi is comprised of more than 300
chapters in the United States, Puerto Rico, and
the Philippines. - Since its founding, Phi Kappa Phi has initiated
more than one million members.
Phi Kappa Phi members from the 1900 University of
Maine Prism yearbook. UMaines Coburn Hall, the
location of President Abram Harris office, is
considered the birthplace of Phi Kappa Phi.
4Who makes up Phi Kappa Phi?
- Election to membership is by invitation only.
- Those elected to membership include the upper 7.5
percent of last-term juniors and the upper 10
percent of seniors, along with outstanding
graduate students, faculty, professional staff,
and alumni. - Each year, approximately 30,000 students,
faculty, professional staff, and alumni are
initiated.

initiatives. - The Societys commitment to the cause of literacy
grows out of and is consistent with its mission,
which was expanded to include and to engage the
community of scholars in service to others.
