The Father of Lies

• Accused of concocting interviews travels
• When a source was unavailable, he would give the
  leading versions then offer his own take on it
• The large area described in The Histories brings
  into question whether he actually traveled to all
  of the places mentioned
• Modern archaelogical efforts have largely cleared
  him of the allegations

Legacy

• Recognized as a pioneer of ethnography
  topography
• The Histories painted a picture of the ancient
  world its people
• Neither rain, nor snow, nor heat nor gloom of
  night stays these couriers from the swift
  completion of their appointed rounds
