Learning Objectives
C1a 2
This PowerPoint file contains some Learning
Objectives for this topic in the AQA
specification. Only a limited amount of colour
has been used on these slides, but of course you
can customise them in any way you wish. As well
as introducing each lesson with the relevant
slide, and using the slide to summarise at the
end of the lesson, you may also find the slides
useful for a quick revision course. So that you
can tell when to stop clicking, the last line
(only) on each slide has a full stop.
Chapters 4, 6, 7 and 21 AQA Topic C1a 2
2
Rocks and metals Chapter 6 You should
learn
  • Ores contain enough metal to make it economical
to extract the metal and this changes over time
  • Metals less reactive than carbon, can be
extracted from their oxides by reduction with
    carbon.

C1a.2
3
Rocks and metals Chapter 6/21 You
should learn
  • Iron oxide is reduced using carbon in the blast
    furnace
  • Iron from the blast furnace contains 90 iron.
The other impurities present make the iron
    brittle, this limits its use
  • The arrangement of the atoms in pure iron
    explains why iron is soft.

C1a.2
4
Rocks and metals Chapter 6/21 You
should learn
  • Most iron is converted into steel
  • Steels are alloys (mixtures of iron, carbon and
    other metals)
  • Alloys have structures which relate to specific
    uses
  • Low carbon, high carbon and stainless steels have
    different properties.

C1a.2
5
Rocks and metals Chapter 6/21 You
should learn
  • Many metals in everyday use are alloys
  • Metals such as gold, copper and aluminium which
are too soft for many uses, may be alloyed to
    make them harder
  • Smart alloys can return to their original shape
    after being deformed.

C1a.2
6
Rocks and metals Chapter 4 You
should learn
  • The elements in the central block of the periodic
table are called the Transition metals
  • Transition metals have the properties typical of
other metals. They are good conductors of heat
and electricity and may be bent or hammered into
    shape.

C1a.2
7
Rocks and metals Chapter 4/7
You should learn
  • The properties of copper make it useful for
    electrical wiring and plumbing
  • Copper is extracted by electrolysis
  • The supply of copper rich ores is limited.

C1a.2
8
Rocks and metals Chapter 4/7
You should learn
  • New ways of extracting copper from low-grade ores
are being researched to limit the environmental
    impact of traditional mining.

C1a.2
9
Rocks and metals chapter 21/7 You
should learn
  • Aluminium and titanium have a low density and are
resistant to corrosion. This makes them useful
    for specific purposes
  • Aluminium and titanium cannot be extracted from
their oxides using carbon. Current methods of
extracting these metals are also expensive.

C1a.2
10
Rocks and metals Chapter 21/7 You
should learn
  • We should recycle metals because extracting them
is using up our limited resources
  • Extracting metals is also expensive in terms of
the energy required in the process and the
    effects on the environment.
