- Functional is a psychological cause
- (stress, fears, traumatic experiences)

persistent fears prevent a person from enjoying
life. Characterized by chronic nervousness or
agitation.

speaking) - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Witness a tragic
event with symptoms occurring after event
(nightmares, insomnia)

- Somatoform Disorders-An illness in which a person
complains of disease symptoms, but no physical
cause can be found - EX Hypochondria- presumed problems with the body

- Affective Disorders An illness (often with an
organic cause) that relates to emotions and may
involve mood swings or mood extremes - Example Clinical Depression (extreme
depression), Bi-Polar/Manic Depression (extreme
mood swings)

- A variety of psychological conditions that
affect a persons ability to get along with
others - Example Schizophrenia (split-mind), Dissociative
Identity Disorder (multiple personalities)

- Ideal Self- Your mental image of what you would
LIKE to be - Self Concept- The CURRENT mental image you have
of yourself - Body Image- A persons perception of his or her
image, appearance, level of health and fitness

- Self-Esteem is defined as the confidence of an
individual. - Self-Esteem is important because feeling good
about yourself can affect how you act. A person
who has high self-esteem will make friends
easily, is more in control of his or her
behavior, and will enjoy life more.

- Walking with your head down.
- You dont make and/or sustain direct eye contact.
- You do not accept compliments well.
- You apologize and feel guilty.

- Give yourself three compliments every day
- Remember that your body is your own, no matter
what shape, size, or color - Remember that there are things about yourself you
can't change - When you hear negative comments in your head,
tell yourself to stop
