Building the Titanic
  • The Titanic was finished in 1912.
  • It was the longest ship in the world in those
    days.
  • When it was launched 1000s of people were waving

  • It was built in Belfast and was
  • designed by Thomas Andrews.
  • It was as long as three football fields and as
    tall as an 11-story building.
  • There was room for more than 2,500 people on
    board.

Thomas Andrews
  • Thomas Andrews designed the
    Titanic. He tried to make the ship the most
    comfortable in the world and he tried to make the
    ship as safe as possible.

Safety
  • The hull had 2 layers of metal.
  • It had 16 safety compartments to stop it getting
    flooded.
  • People thought the Titanic was unsinkable.

Titanic crew
  • On board were 891 crew. In the kitchen stewards
    and stewardesses collected the food. A few
    hundred stewards and stewardesses looked
  • after the passengers. The captains name was
    Captain Smith.

Wireless radio room
  • There were two operators in the wireless room.
  • They slept in bunk beds in part of the room.
    They used a machine and sent messages in morse
    code.
  • They received messages that there were icebergs
    about.
  • The rich passengers sent messages to their
    friends and family using the wireless.

Life boats
  • There were sixteen life boats on the Titanic.
    There werent enough life boats for everyone on
    board. They didnt think it would be a problem
    because they thought it was unsinkable.

First class passengers
  • In the first class cabins they had shower rooms
    and their servants slept near them. The first
    class passengers looked very posh. They wore
    very big hats in those days.

2 Class cabins
  • The 2nd class passengers had their own cabins in
    the middle of the ship. They had wash stands and
    bunk beds in their cabins.

3rd Class Cabins
  • The 3rd class passengers had bunk beds to sleep
    on. There were some family rooms but the rest of
    the 3rd class were separated.
  • The women slept at the back of the ship and the
    men at the front of the ship in dormitories.

Restaurants
  • First class people
  • had there own dining room and so did the
    second and third class.
  • In the first class dining room they had
    fresh flowers on the table. The first class
    dining room was the biggest and the best.

The food for the passengers and crew
  • There was lots of food on board to feed the
    passengers and crew. There were 36000 oranges
    and tea. There was lots of milk and butter. There
    was a baker. The ship carried 7000 lettuces and
    3000 kg of tomatoes.

Entertaining the passengers
  • The first class passengers could swim in the
    swimming pool.
  • Also they could send messages to their friends
    and family in the radio room.
  • They could eat and drink in the café or several
    restaurants.

Exercising on board
  • There was a gym. In
  • the gym was a mechanical horse and there was a
    mechanical camel. The passengers could also walk
    on the deck. Passengers could play squash in the
    squash court.

  • One night in the voyage a very sad thing
    happened it was a waste of English steel. The
    Titanic collided with a iceberg. It sank on
    14th April 1912.

Saving the passengers
  • As the Titanic only had 16 lifeboats many
    people survive. The crew helped the women and
    children into the lifeboats first. More of the
    1st class and 2nd class passengers were saved
    than the poor 3rd class passengers.
