What is the Knowledge Skills Framework?
  • NHS-wide system to describe the knowledge and
    skills staff need to do their job. Three key
    strands in Agenda for Change
  • 1 the KSF
  • 2 job evaluation
  • 3 terms and conditions

Whats the purpose of the KSF?
  • To promote lifelong learning
  • employ principles of good appraisal and people
    management
  • To develop a skilled workforce that is fit for
    purpose
  • To improve patient care

What does it mean?
  • Every NHS staff member should have
  • A KSF post outline for their job
  • A development review meeting with their manager
    at least once a year
  • A personal development plan
  • A contractual right to learning and
  • development

  • Put patients at the heart of everything it does
  • Unite staff behind a clear direction
  • Develop teams around a common goal
  • Focus learning resources - giving staff the tools

NHS Constitution
  • Pledge 1 To provide all staff with clear roles
    and responsibilities and rewarding jobs for teams
    and individuals that make a difference to
    patients, their families and carers, and to
    communities.
  • Pledge 2 To provide all staff with personal
    development plans, access to appropriate training
    for their jobs and the support of line management
    to succeed.

Challenges to realising the benefits of KSF
  • Staff Survey - 64 had an appraisal or KSF review
    (61 in 2007)
  • Some Trusts arent using the KSF at all
  • Managers report that it is complex to use
  • Independent Review under way

Make the most of the KSF
  • Take a full part in the KSF process
  • Prepare in advance for your development review
    meeting with your manager
  • Get help and support from your workplace Union
    Learning Rep or steward
  • Make it a positive experience!
