Definition
  • A abused child is a boy or girl under the age of
    18 years who has suffered physical injury,
    neglect, emotional or sexual abuse which the
    person or persons who had custody, charge or care
    of the child either caused or knowingly failed to
    prevent.

  • Sexual abuse is the commonest kind
  • Children are 7 times more likely to be badly
    beaten by parents than sexually abused
  • Most physical abuse is carried out by men
  • In 49 it was the mother and 40 the father

  • Most sexual abuse is father/daughter
  • This type is rare occurring in only 0.4
  • Outside the family sexual violence is by adults
  • Young people are the commonest offenders
  • Sexual abuse by professionals is common
  • Less than 0.3 reported such abuse
