  Board, age 14 years.
• Became manager of one of her fathers two
  tobacco shops
• Spent her salary on singing lessons and won a
  contract with Drury Lane Theatre
• Then lost her singing voice after typhoid
  infection

• Travelled to Brisbane with her sister Daisy on
  the steamer Jumina in 1900 (age 23 years)
• Worked as barmaids and moved to Sydney 2 years
  later
• Became manager of a derelict hotel in Nyngan,
  near Bourke in NSW
• Was unable to accept the liquor licence as she
  was a single woman.
• Embarked on a ship to return to England, but
  disembarked at Fremantle because of Daisys
  sea-sickness.
