• 3 ½ Years in Recycling Waste Management for
  O.C.C
• MSc in Environmental Assessment and Management
• Various projects for the EiE (Environmental
  Information Exchange) and CESHI (Centre for
  Environmental Studies in the Hospitality
  Industry)
• Environmental Manager at Lucys Switchgear
• ISO Auditors course in Environmental Auditing
• Global Manager of Quality/Environment Safety
  Systems in Dubai, UAE.

Lucys Who we are and What we do

• Manufacturer of Electrical Switchgear for over
  200 years
• Largest supplier of switchgear to the Middle East
  and Africa
• Over 200 employees at Thame site (Over 1000 at
  old site)
• 2 other sites in Witney and Banbury The Foundry
  and RD
• Turnover of approximately 70m p.a.
• Has also outsourced operations to China, Saudi,
  Dubai, India and the Czech Republic

Before I joined Lucys

• Very loose Environmental Program managed ad-hoc
  by various managers
• Lucys interested via my appointment
• Heard of REC through former colleagues
• Low level of resource efficiency previous to me
  joining. All packaging, wood and recyclates were
  landfilled

How REC has helped

• Working for a large organisation with no
  environmental history so very little emphasis
  placed on preserving the environment
• Very much on my own so seeking backup and help
  has been essential
• REC have helped by coming in and performing waste
  audits, introducing me to other members and
  running very useful workshops
• Always available to speak on the phone with
  excellent advice to point you in the right
  direction

How REC has helped

• Saved the company upwards of 20000 through
  better resource efficiency and waste management
• Increased packaging recycling levels to over 80
  using a cardboard and plastic baler
• Increased awareness of the staff through
  workshops, training and on the spot guidance
• Recent Carbon Trust Energy training has really
  helped generate ideas
• Staff are genuinely interested now and I get
  approached with ideas all the time

Planned Changes for the Future

• Increase efficiency further through plastic
  recycling from moulding area
• A reward scheme linked to energy saving ideas and
  suggestions
• The largest savings to be made come from the shop
  floor (approx. 18000) so an incentive driven
  program is being developed
• Selling bales of Cardboard and Plastic back to a
  3rd party
• Recycle all resources as close to 100 as
  possible

Difficulties and Problems

• Needs top level buy in from Senior Management
• May put constraints on due to a) Commercial
  Savings b) Compliance issues
• People doing same job for decades not interested
  in the Environment
• The Whats in it for me attitude
• Red tape

• Solutions
• Identify allies and get them working for you.
• Show people who what they do at work can save
  them money at home.
• Show how committed you are to changing things.
• Work the conversation towards their suggestions
  people are much likely to do what they suggested.
• By gaining the hearts and minds. This itself
  leads to a knock on effect within the working
  environment

• What more can the REC do?
• Meet up more regularly perhaps on site at other
  businesses
• Create better links for sharing resources between
  companies
• Keep going with the workshops to keep up to date
  with recent trends, new breakthroughs, new
  legislation and general sharing of ideas
