Chapter 1 Introduction One picture is worth
more than ten thousand words.
  • Preview
  • digital image processing methods stems form two
    principal application areas
  • ?improvement of pictorial information (human)
and processing of image data (machine)
  • 1.1 What is Digital Image Processing ?
  • An image may be defined as a two-dimensional
    function, f(x, y),x, y are spatial coordinates,
and the amplitude of f at any pair of coordinates
(x, y) is called the intensity or gray level of
    the image at that point.
  • When x, y, and the amplitude values of f are all
finite, discrete quantities, we call the image a
    digital image.
  • The digital image processing refers to
processing digital images by means of a digital
computer. Note that a digital image is composed
of a finite number of elements, each of which has
    a particular location and value.
  • These elements are referred to as picture
elements, image elements, pels, and pixels.

3
  • 1.2 The origins of Digital Image processing
  • One of the first applications of digital images
was in the newspapers industry, when pictures
where first sent by submarine cable between
    London and New York(1920s).
  • .
  • In parallel with space applications, digital
image processing techniques began in the late
1960s and early 1970s to be used in medical image
, remote Earth resources observations, and
    astronomy.
  • 1.3 Examples of Fields that Use Digital Image
    Processing
  • 1.3.1 Gamma-Ray Imaging
  • 1.3.2 X-ray Imaging
  • 1.3.3 Imaging in the Ultraviolet Band
  • 1.3.4 Imaging in the Visible and Infrared Bands
  • 1.3.5 Imaging in the Microwave Band
  • 1.3.6 Imaging in the Radio Band
  • 1.3.7 Examples in which Other Imaging Modalities
    Are Used

4
  • 1.4 Fundamental Steps in Digital Image Processing
  • Figure 1.23

5
  • 1.5 Components of an Image Processing System
