national statistics
The Data
  • More students fail the ninth grade than any
    other grade.
  • Students who live below the national poverty
    level are twice as likely as others to be
    retained.
  • Students who repeat at least one year are three
    times more likely to drop out of school
    than students who have not failed a grade.
  • Among 14 - 15 year-olds who struggle with
    basic reading and math skills, 20 drop out
    of school within two years.

The Mission
Freshman Academy
  • The Freshman Academy, based solidly on current
    research, is a comprehensive program that strives
    to provide each ninth grade student with a
    nurturing academic environment for the successful
    transition from middle school to high school.

Freshman Academy Teachers will collaborate on all
aspects of curriculum design and instruction to
support the achievement of all students. This
includes such activities as
  • Common planning time
  • Solve challenges and celebrate successes as a
    team
  • Expand individual classes to accommodate and
    maximize student learning
  • Communicate with parents to establish a positive
    working relationship

  • The Freshman Academy Faculty recognizes that
    parental support is critical to the success of
    each student. The faculty has incorporated
    several strategies to increase parental
    awareness, communication and participation.
  • Parent participation in Student Success plans.
  • Parent conferences during Team Planning Time.
  • Encourage parent involvement in the planning of
    service activities.

4-step discipline plan
  • Step 1
  • first work with the student meet with student,
    identify problematic behavior, and develop
    success plan utilizing SMART goals including
    consequences
  • Step 2
  • meet with student to evaluate success or failure
    of the success plan. If needed, collaborate with
    parents and modify the student success plan and
    associated SMART goals.
  • Step 3
  • if the student behavior doesnt improve, meet
    with student, parents, guidance counselor to
    determine possible solutions.
  • Step 4
  • and, finally, refer student to school
    administration.

homework detention
  • A homework detention was developed to assist
    students to understand the importance of
    completing homework assignments on time.
  • Students will be assigned a 15 minute homework
    detention to complete missing homework.
  • If the student completes the missing homework
    assignment before the detention the student will
    serve a shorter time.
  • If the student makes no attempt to attend the
    detention or does not work during the detention a
    write up to the principals office and a full
    school detention will be given.
  • The homework detentions will be monitored by the
    Freshman Academy Teachers located in their
    classroom on a rotating basis.
  • A student that is assigned a homework detention
    will receive one school day notice.

character education
  • Character education is an important tool in
    efforts to improve test scores.
  • An analysis of the skills or habits necessary for
    academic achievement and the skills or habits
    taught through systematic character education are
    identical.
