2About the Project
The battles and generals of World War II have
been studied by students for decades without the
understanding that World War II not only impacted
the world stage, but also the every day lives of
all Americans of the time. America's youth as
well as future generations deserve and require
more than just the textbook definition of what
World War II was comprised of and how it impacted
the societies of the world. The best way to
achieve this understanding is for an authentic,
academic achievement that places today's student
next to the primary source of the American
experience. The primary source that is readily
available to all classrooms and schools around
the country is the men and women who took part in
the actual events of World War II both in their
homes and overseas. The eyewitness accounts,
coupled with memories, pictures, and other
memorabilia are an invaluable resource. The
virtually untapped resources of our veterans and
their families could be used to lead a better
understanding and a further appreciation for the
events, people, and experiences of World War
II. This project illuminates the past to students
by personalizing both their studies, and their
knowledge of the heroic, the terrifying, and the
personal events of World War II. The stories of
veterans, survivors, and descendents range from
the personal struggles of individuals to the
recounting of the greater exploits of the
American experience.
