5Technology as a Problem Solver
- Short Term
- Network Elements as Mediators among different
Access Technologies allow Interoperability - Multimode User Terminals supporting various
technologies - Complementation among technologies
- WiFi, Wimax / CDMA Handoff
- EVDO as WiFi backhaul for Wi-Fi On-the-Move
- WiMax backhaul for EVDO/UMTS
- Medium to Long Term
- Isolation of network layers Access, Control,
Application - Access Agnostic Services
- All IP Architecture VoIP from the user terminal
isolates services from the access mode and allows
Convergence - New Network Model with IMS (IP Multimedia
Subsystem)
6Future Networks and Services
7What is IMS?
- IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) is a new model
defining the control layer of next generation
networks (NGN) - Defined by 3GPP initially targeted mobile
operators, but was expanded to wireline segment
and addresses convergence between wireless and
wireline - It fixes the previous issues of traditional TDM
and NGN models - Avoids proliferation of standards SIP is defined
as the key protocol - Supports Multimedia Services and not only Voice
- Allows seamless mobility for wireless and
wireline users - Uses a much modular and distributed network
design - Allows Access Agnostic Services
- Consolidates User Profiles and Databases for all
services - All major standardization bodies contribute to
IMS - 3GPP, 3GPP2, IETF, ITU, OMA, ANSI, ETSI,
8Impact of IMS to Operators
- Carriers will get higher ARPU and increased
revenues due to more and much richer multimedia
services offerings - IMS breaks the barriers between voice and data
and between wireless and wireline - IMS will allow much simpler networks by means of
an end-to-end IP design and by consolidating user
databases - IMS Reduces Operations complexity allowing OpEx
savings - Carriers will have to evolve their networks and
adapt their operations to this new network and
business model - Carriers can share the same infrastructure for
wireless and wireline services
9Impact of IMS to End Users
- End Users will enjoy access to new services,
independent of where they are and independent of
the type of access - End Users will enjoy seamless mobility on both
cellular and fixed terminals - Within the same session a user can exchange
images, emails, and files in addition to having a
voice call - They can convert the session into a
videoconference call - All without needing to close and restart
additional communication sessions - Users will be able to self-provision their
services and preferences through a single portal
web interface
