What Happened? Communism in China
  • Decades of civil war prevailed in China between
    the Communist Party, led by Mao, and the
    Nationalist Party, led by Chiang Kai Shek.
  • In 1949, Mao captured Beijing and declared China
    as The Peoples Republic of China at Tiananmen
    Square in Beijing.

  • US runs a capitalist system while USSR runs a
    communist system
  • Stalin believed that Communism should spread
    worldwide
  • US has a containment policy stated in the
    Truman Doctrine that the US is committed to
    prevent the spread of Communism throughout the
    world

  • Mao sought for external help from Stalin to
    rebuild China
  • Stalin and Mao signed a friendly defense treaty
    as it was now its Communist ally - fought
    together in the Korean War.

What Happened greater tensions
  • Stalins death left a new leader Khrushchev to
    take over USSR
  • US, afraid of continued Communism spread, help
    build up Taiwan (Nationalist Party)
  • Khrushchev wanted to change USSR into a
    non-Stalinist nation which was a threat to China
  • Mao, afraid of betrayal by USSR, wanted to
    improve relations with US
  • pingpong diplomacy reduced tensions between
    China and US and now they both turned against USSR

    campaigns during the civil war such as the Great
    Leap Forward, and Cultural Revolution
  • Stalin (1879-1953) totalitarian dictator of
    Russia, wanted Communism spread, created tensions

    strongly against the spread of Communism
