Title: Welcome To

Welcome To Luke Chapter 4
2
Luke 41 Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy
Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by
the Spirit into the wilderness,
Matthew 41-11 Mark 112-13, will also be
talking about Jesus going into the desert after
he was baptized
After Jesus was baptized, the H.S came upon Him.
He was filled with Power. He was ready to start
His ministry and the way He would do it would be
by going into the wilderness Luke says that He
was Lead by the Spirit Matthew that He was lead
to be temped Does God tempt us?
3
Luke 42being tempted for forty days by the
devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and
afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.
Satan,
There is a difference between Testing and
tempting Yes, we are looking at the fact that
Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness
to be tempted(Matthew)
What is the meaning of the word Tempting?
PEIRAZO
peirazo (pi-rad'-zo) to test (objectively), i.e.
endeavor, scrutinize, entice, discipline
4
Luke 42being tempted for forty days by the
devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and
afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.
Satan,
God himself is never the agent of temptation
(James 113) but, here, as in Job, God uses His
Sovereign purposes. Christ was tempted in all
points (Heb 415 1 John 216), Satan tempted Him
with the lust of the flesh, the lust of the
eyes, and the pride of life.
Jesus was not tempted so that the Father could
learn anything about His Son, for, the Father had
already given Jesus His divine approval. Jesus
was tempted so that every creature in heaven, on
earth, or under the earth might know that Jesus
Christ is the Conqueror. He exposed Satan and his
tactics, and He defeated Satan.
5
Luke 42being tempted for forty days by the
devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and
afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.
Satan,
  • Because of His victory, we can have victory over
the tempter just as the first Adam met Satan. So,
the Last Adam met the enemy (1 Cor 1545).
  • Adam met Satan in a beautiful Garden, but Jesus
met him in a terrible wilderness.
  • Adam had everything he needed, but Jesus was
hungry after forty days of fasting.
  • Adam lost the battle and plunged humanity into
sin and death. But Jesus won the battle and went
on to defeat Satan in more battles, culminating
in His final victory on the cross (John 1231
    Col 215).

6
Luke 42being tempted for forty days by the
devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and
afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.
He ate nothing Jesus was getting ready for the
test of His life. He was about to start his
personal ministry and the wilderness would be the
place of preparation. He was HUNGRY! Jesus is
like you and I. He was hungry after fasting!
Forty days and forty nights
7
Luke 433 And the devil said to Him, "If You are
the Son of God, command this stone to become
bread."
The Devil From the Greek word, Diabolos. That
is The accuser, Slanderer, the Serpent,
Satan. Can Satan touch us? Imagine if he can
touch the Son of God, I would say that touching
us would not be a problem for Satan What is the
tactic that Satan used against Jesus? Well
lets see
8
Luke 433 And the devil said to Him, "If You are
the Son of God, command this stone to become
bread."
If You Are The Son Of God! Satan knew very well
that Jesus was the Son of God. The demons
confessed from their mouths on many occasions
that He was the real Son of God. Mark 311 Luke
441 Luke 828 Acts 1915 What is the tactic
that Satan used against Jesus? Well lets see
9
Luke 433 And the devil said to Him, "If You are
the Son of God, command this stone to become
bread."
If You Are The Son Of God! Is Satan trying to
put doubts in Jesus? Well, Satan will use
whatever he can to put even the Son of God in
sin Command this stones to become bread Was
Jesus able to do that? Then, why did he not do
it? Notice, Satan is mocking Jesus when He says,
If you are Is Like saying, you the Son of God
and starving to death? Luke 2335
10
Luke 433 And the devil said to Him, "If You are
the Son of God, command this stone to become
bread."
Jesus could have converted the stones into bread
in the same way that He Turn the water into
wine. Fed 4000 the first time Fed 5000 the
second time Heal the blind man with just saliva
and mud Put the ear back to Malcus. Walk in the
water Found the money inside the fish's mouth
to pay the taxes to Caesar Bring Lazarus from
the dead. Calm the water and the winds Heal the
ten lepers at once Transfigured Himself in front
of the disciples. Come back from the dead etc
11
Luke 44 But Jesus answered him, saying, "It is
written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but
by every word of God.' "
The Way the Lord Defends Himself It is
Written Where? In the Bible, the Scriptures
Deuteronomy 83 Can we also answer in the same
way? Ephesians 617 Col 316. Psalm 11911 1
Cor 1013. 1 Tim 316-17.
12
Luke 44 But Jesus answered him, saying, "It is
written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but
by every word of God.' "
When Jesus says bread alone is he implying
that we are not suppose to eat, or work to earn
our daily food? What Then is Jesus teaching
concerning bread alone?
What Jesus is saying is Do not trust in
yourself but in God. Recognize that everything
comes from God. Many feel so secure because they
have many possessions and they believe that God
is not necessity in their lives. Bread alone is
not enough, we must learn to recognize God in our
lives, believers and unbelievers Mat 633
13
Luke 45-7Then the devil, taking Him up on a
high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the
world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said
to Him, "All this authority I will give You, and
their glory for this has been delivered to me,
and I give it to whomever I wish. 7 Therefore, if
You will worship before me, all will beYours."

Satan is a liar and the father of it. Genesis
31-5 John 844 1 John 519 He cannot give
Jesus anything, for Jesus is the creator of all.
John 11-4 Col 115-18. For this has been
delivered to me Liar. He does not have
anything I give it to whom I wish
Delivered By Whom?
14
Luke 45-7Then the devil, taking Him up on a
high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the
world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said
to Him, "All this authority I will give You, and
their glory for this has been delivered to me,
and I give it to whomever I wish. 7 Therefore, if
You will worship before me, all will beYours."

What is it that Satan wants from Jesus? IF YOU
WILL WORSHIP ME Satan wants for Jesus to worship
him Thats a great violation according to
Exodus 204-5 We shall NOT worship anything that
is NOT THE TRUE AND LIVING GOD. Jesus will not be
deceived by the tactics from this liar.
15
Luke 488 And Jesus answered and said to him,
"Get behind Me, Satan! For it is written, 'You
shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you
shall serve.' "
Sometimes we feel good because we do not bend our
knees worshipping any other Gods, but remember
please that Covetousness is Idolatry! Col
35. Maybe we all need to understand and study
this concept all over again. God is the one who
deserves all the honor, glory, and loyalty from
our part. Jesus is telling Satan that our life
should be dedicated for and by God. He quotes in
order to refute Satan, Deut 613 1020. We all
need to do the same whenever we feel that Satan
is attacking us, the Bible should be the first
thing that we prepare.
16
Victory over temptation is essential before we
can live and minister for God. No temptation has
ever confronted man that Jesus Christ has not
confronted. This is seen in this passage. In His
confrontation, Jesus reveals what lies behind
each temptation and how to conquer it. Once it
has been conquered, we can then live a victorious
life and serve God effectively. 1.Being prepared
to serve God (v.1-2). 2.Temptation 1 to meet the
necessities of life by His own power
(v.3-4). 3.Temptation 2 to seek His ambition
through compromise (v.5-8). 4.Temptation 3 to
prove Himself through sensationalism
(v.9-12). 5.Conclusion Satan left Jesus for a
while (v. 13-15).
17
Luke 49-119 Then he brought Him to Jerusalem,
set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said
to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw
Yourself down from here. 10 For it is written
'He shall give His angels charge over you, To
keep you,' 11 "and, 'In their hands they shall
bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a
stone.' "
Satan is inducing Jesus to jump down he says
If you are the Son of God. He has a lot of
problems with Jesus being the Son of God. Satan
says FOR IT IS WRITTEN. Had Satan read the
Bible before? Yes, Satan knows that the Bible
says that in Psalm 9111-12
18
Luke 49-119 Then he brought Him to Jerusalem,
set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said
to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw
Yourself down from here. 10 For it is written
'He shall give His angels charge over you, To
keep you,' 11 "and, 'In their hands they shall
bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a
stone.' "
Brothers notice please that Satan and his
ministers can use some Bible passages and twisted
for their own convenience Satan says FOR IT IS
WRITTEN. 2 Corinthians 1113-15 2 Peter
316. Yes but upside down What is the mistake
that Satan is making when he quotes Psalm 91?
19
Luke 49-119 Then he brought Him to Jerusalem,
set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said
to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw
Yourself down from here. 10 For it is written
'He shall give His angels charge over you, To
keep you,' 11 "and, 'In their hands they shall
bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a
stone.' "
God has in fact promised us protection whenever
we are in trouble, but God will not guarantee us
protection when we by our own foolishness fall in
some kind of danger or trouble.
20
Luke 49-119 Then he brought Him to Jerusalem,
set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said
to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw
Yourself down from here. 10 For it is written
'He shall give His angels charge over you, To
keep you,' 11 "and, 'In their hands they shall
bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a
stone.' "
Jumping from a cliff Jumping from a plane
without Parachute.. Driving 180km/h on
Deerfoot... Trying to cross Deerfoot trail in
rush-hour, walking Satan does not know that we
are not to tempt our God with any foolishness
from our part.
21
Luke 412 12 And Jesus answered and said to him,
"It has been said, 'You shall not tempt the Lord
your God.' "
Lord Jesus again will answer with the Bible and
this is the perfect way to defeat the
tempter Deuteronomy 616 We Must NOT put God
in temptation because the people who will lose
are us, not God. Num 1422 214-5 1
Corinthians 109,10 Lets not trespass by
making mistakes and thinking that Jesus will help
us, because any way he is a loving God. HE WILL
NOT!
22
Luke 41313 Now when the devil had ended every
temptation, he departed from Him until an
opportune time.
When Satan knows that he cannot defeat us, he
runs James 417 7 Therefore submit to God.
Resist the devil and he will flee from
you. Ephesians 617 17 And take the helmet of
salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is
the word of God SATAN CAN ONLY INVITE US, BUT
CANNOT FORCE US TO DO THE THINGS THAT WE DONT
WANT!
23
Luke 41414 Then Jesus returned in the power of
the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out
through all the surrounding region.
Jesus came to Galilee in the Power of The
Spirit By the influence or Direction of the
Spirit. News that Jesus was among them went out
through all the surrounding region. This is the
time that all have been waiting for. The Son of
God is among them and many will have the
opportunity to turn to the Lord
24
Luke 41515 And He taught in their synagogues,
being glorified by all.
In Acts we will find Synagogues in Cyprus,
135 Antioch of Pisidia 1314 Iconium
141. Berea 1710 etc Jesus is teaching in a
Synagogue. The Result He was glorified by
all. At the beginning Jesus was very popular
among them but He was always prepared about that.
John 224,25
25
Luke 416 16 So He came to Nazareth, where He
had been brought up. And as His custom was, He
went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and
stood up to read.
THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF THE MINISTRY OF JESUS
WHEN HE WAS 30 YEARS OLD Matthew 412-17
Mark114-15.
He came to His city, Nazareth. Lets all
understand that Jesus was Nazarene not Nazarite
two different things. John 145 It was Jesus
practice or custom to attend the reading of God
s law every Saturday. Com. Heb 1025.
26
Luke 416 16 So He came to Nazareth, where He
had been brought up. And as His custom was, He
went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and
stood up to read.
WAS JESUS SABATH KEEPER? The Sabbath keepers
nowadays when they argue about keeping the
Sabbath or Saturday say that even Jesus kept the
Sabbath, is that true? Then, why Jesus was among
them on Saturday?
27
  • It was his custom for the simple reason that He
was a Jew and was like them.
  • He was born under the Law. Gal 44. Are the
    Sabbath keepers doing this?
  • He was circumcised then presented to God with the
right sacrifices. Luke 221-24. Are the Sabbath
    keepers doing this?
  • Jesus ate the Passover. Mat 2617-18. Are the
    Sabbath keepers doing this?
  • This is the day when the majority of the Jews
leader are concentrated. Are the Sabbath Keepers
preaching in the synagogues every Saturday?

28
Luke 417 And He was handed the book of the
prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book,
He found the place where it was written
They gave Him the book to read, and the book was
from Isaiah. Isaiah has been called the
Messianic prophet for being the one who spoke
more than any other about the Messiah Jesus
will be in great trouble soon because they did
not believe that He was the Messiah and this
prophecy that He is about to read is belong only
to the Messiah
29
Luke 418 "The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel
to the poor He has sent Me to heal the
brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the
captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To
set at liberty those who are oppressed
The Spirit of The Lord is Upon Me How? Since
baptism? Yes, Jesus receive the approval from God
when He was baptized. Matthew 317. Because He
has anointed me When? In baptism? Is Thats when
Jesus was anointed?
30
Luke 418 "The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel
to the poor He has sent Me to heal the
brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the
captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To
set at liberty those who are oppressed
To preach the gospel to the poor How about the
rich? Are we talking the physical poverty or
spiritual. Matt 53 Isa 587 Matt 115. Who is
more willing to receive the gospel of Jesus?
31
Luke 418 "The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel
to the poor He has sent Me to heal the
brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the
captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To
set at liberty those who are oppressed
To Heal the brokenhearted... Who are the broken
hearted in this passage? To console those who are
deeply afflicted, or whose hearts are broken by
external calamities or by a sense of their
sinfulness. Mark. 25 Luke. 848
32
The Messiah was to minister. A threefold ministry
was mentioned. He was to heal the brokenhearted.
Note that He was not only to help the
brokenhearted, He was to heal the brokenhearted,
those who were... crushed by grief----------------
-------------------shattered opposed--------------
------------------------------cut off  blemished
by sin--------------------------violated by
sin infected--------------------------------------
-------diseased weakened--------------------------
-----------------subdued injured------------------
------------------------------bankrupt
33
Luke 418 "The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel
to the poor He has sent Me to heal the
brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the
captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To
set at liberty those who are oppressed
To proclaim liberty to the captives... Who are
the ones in captivity, The Jews? Yes! Jesus is
not talking about any physical captivity, even
thought they are slaves of Rome. Jesus is talking
about being slaves of Sin. John 830-36
34
Luke 418 "The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel
to the poor He has sent Me to heal the
brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the
captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To
set at liberty those who are oppressed
And recovery of sight to the Blind Literal blind
or spiritual? Both, Jesus was preaching, but He
could not see those in need and ignored them, he
was healing many Matthew 927-29 John 91-5
35
Luke 418 "The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel
to the poor He has sent Me to heal the
brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the
captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To
set at liberty those who are oppressed
To set at liberty those who are oppressed. The
word oppressed or bruised, here, evidently has
the same general signification as broken-hearted
or the contrite. It means those who are pressed
down by great calamity, or whose hearts are
pressed or bruised by the consciousness of sin.
To set them at liberty is the same as to free
them from this pressure, or to give them
consolation.
36
Luke 419 To proclaim the acceptable year of the
LORD."
The Messiah was to preach the age of salvation.
The term "acceptable year" means the era, the
age or day of salvation, 2 Cor. 62 It means that
the age of the Messiah has come. The idea is that
salvation has Finally entered into the world
thru Jesus Christ. Anyone now can be saved
and The Son of God has come for that
37
Lu 420 Then He closed the book, and gave it back
to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of
all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him.
All eyes "were fastened on Him" a descriptive
phrase meaning fixed, gazing, spellbound. They
stared at Him in rapt attention their eyes were
locked upon Him eagerly waiting to see what He
had to say.
Jesus retuned the Book, but thats not all He
went back and sat down. They wait for the
comment that He is about to make. They know that
something will come out His mouth
38
Luke 421 21 And He began to say to them, "Today
this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."
His voice pierced the air "This day this
scripture is fulfilled in your hearing a
phenomenal claim. The word "today" is important.
The people thought of the Messiah's coming and
the Messianic age in terms of the future. Jesus
proclaimed that He was the Messiahthat the
Messianic Age was then and nowthat all the
Scripture of Isaiah was fulfilled in Him.
39
Luke 421 21 And He began to say to them, "Today
this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."
"This day this scripture is fulfilled in your
hearing
He proclaimed... That He was the One upon whom
the Spirit abode. That He was the One anointed to
preach the gospel to the poor and captives. That
He was the One who healed the brokenhearted. That
He was the One who gave sight to the blind. That
He was the One who freed the bruised. That He was
the One who preached the acceptable year of the
Lord, the age of salvation.
40
Luke 422 22 So all bore witness to Him, and
marveled at the gracious words which proceeded
out of His mouth. And they said, "Is this not
Joseph's son?"
1. First, they were impressed with His eloquence,
His charm and winning words, and the power of His
message. Note the word "wondered" (ethaumazon)
It means they began to marvel and to be
astonished at the gracious words flowing from His
mouth. They were taking pride in one of their own
neighbor's being so capable.
41
Luke 422 22 So all bore witness to Him, and
marveled at the gracious words which proceeded
out of His mouth. And they said, "Is this not
Joseph's son?"
2. Second, they began to question. This was
a quick reaction, a quick change. Sitting there
listening, the questions began to arise in their
thoughts "Is this not Joseph's son?" Matthew is
even more descriptive. The people were sitting
there, glancing around, asking in their minds,
"Is not this...His mother...His brethren...His
sisters, are they not all with us?" (Matthew
1355-56). "And they were offended in Him"
(Matthew 1357). The word "offended" means they
stumbled over Him. They could not imagine that
someone from their own townsomeone whom they had
known since a childcould be the Messiah, the Son
of God.
42
Luke 422 22 So all bore witness to Him, and
marveled at the gracious words which proceeded
out of His mouth. And they said, "Is this not
Joseph's son?"
3.Third, they demanded proof, insisted that He
had to heal, that is, prove Himself by working
miracles in their midst.
Remember, all this was still thoughts in their
minds. They were still sitting there and
listening to Him, but their thoughts were
stumbling over His claim to be the Messiah. Jesus
knew their thoughts, so He stopped His message
and directed a statement to them
43
Luke 423 23 He said to them, "You will surely
say this proverb to Me, 'Physician, heal
yourself! Whatever we have heard done in
Capernaum, do also here in Your country.' "
Jesus, they are not saying anything! Yes, but
they are already thinking in that, Remember Jesus
knows whats in our hearts. We dont need to tell
Him. He knows it all John 225 1 Samuel 167 1
Chronicles 289 Matthew 94 Mark 28 John
664
44
Luke 42424 Then He said, "Assuredly, I say to
you, no prophet is accepted in his own country.
What exactly is Jesus saying with that
phrase no prophet is accepted in his own
country. Jesus Christ, Rejection of Salvation
Jesus knew they had already rejected Him.
Therefore, He would not gratify their curiosity
and demand for signs, nor would He continue to
preach but rather He would give a twofold
warning.
45
Luke 425 "But I tell you truly, many widows
were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the
heaven was shut up three years and six months,
and there was a great famine throughout all the
land
Jesus is now referring to the case where Elijah
is running away from Jezebel and God sent him to
the widow in the city of Zarephath. 1 King
179 181 James 517.
What exactly is Jesus trying to teach What is
the point that we are trying to tie in here by
bringing the example from Elijah?
46
Luke 426 "but to none of them was Elijah sent
except to Zarephath, in the region of Sidon, to a
woman who was a widow.
Zarephath is belong to Sidon and Sidon is belong
to Syria not Israel. So God was blessing other
people for the lack of faith from His own people.
Thats the Lesson.
24Then He said, "Assuredly, I say to you, no
prophet is accepted in his own country. Likewise
Jesus did miracles in other places because His
own people did not believe in Him. Matthew 1358.
47
Luke 427 "And many lepers were in Israel in the
time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was
cleansed except Naaman the Syrian."
Again, Jesus is comparing himself with two
great prophets from the Old. Elijah and
Elisha. Same like Elijah, Elisha was sent to heal
a man from Syria because of the unbelief in
Israel. 2 King 514
24Then He said, "Assuredly, I say to you, no
prophet is accepted in his own country. Jesus
knows where exactly are these men going
48
Luke 428 So all those in the synagogue, when
they heard these things, were filled with wrath,
1.Their insane wrath a close-mindedness. 2.Their
insane assault a violent attempt to silence
Jesus. 3.Their insane behavior failed somehow
Jesus was able to escape their assault. How?
Perhaps the people were stricken with a moment of
confusion, a moment of shock, or some temporary
blindness which enabled Him to quickly escape.
49
Luke 429 29 and rose up and thrust Him out of
the city and they led Him to the brow of the
hill on which their city was built, that they
might throw Him down over the cliff.
When someone is preaching the truth, this is the
reaction that comes from all of the
opponents They can not resist the word of God
and they literally pushed Jesus out of their
city They wanted to push Jesus down the hill,
they wanted to kill him What is the damage, what
is the big crime that he committed? Jesus never
trusted any of them for He knew what was in mans
heart They were full of envy and wrath, they
were blinded and also stiff necked.
50
Luke 429 29 and rose up and thrust Him out of
the city and they led Him to the brow of the
hill on which their city was built, that they
might throw Him down over the cliff.
Thought 1. The Lord would not continue to strive
after a man, not forever. A person can go too far
too often, and face eternity without the presence
of God. A person must surrender to the Spirit of
God while there is still time. Genesis 63
Proverbs 2814 Proverbs 291 Romans 24-5
Hebrews 312-14 Thought 2. A people or a person
may wish to silence Jesus and His followers, but
their efforts will be to no avail. The message of
the gospel will never be silenced. Matthew 1616,
18 Matthew 518 1 Kings 856 Psalm 1117).
51
Luke 429 29 and rose up and thrust Him out of
the city and they led Him to the brow of the
hill on which their city was built, that they
might throw Him down over the cliff.
Where are we? In What city is Jesus right
now? Verse 16We are in Nazareth! My question
before we move on is Are there hills in
Nazareth? Many argue that Luke made a mistake
because there are no hills in Nazareth This
picture was taken upon entering the city of
Nazareth and if we look in the back, there are
some hills. I would say, those are more than
enough to kill anyone
52
Luke 429 29 and rose up and thrust Him out of
the city and they led Him to the brow of the
hill on which their city was built, that they
might throw Him down over the cliff.
The city of Nazareth
53
Luke 429 29 and rose up and thrust Him out of
the city and they led Him to the brow of the
hill on which their city was built, that they
might throw Him down over the cliff.
The city of Nazareth Seeing from a Hill
54
Luke 429 29 and rose up and thrust Him out of
the city and they led Him to the brow of the
hill on which their city was built, that they
might throw Him down over the cliff.
Its believe that this is The mountain where
they Wanted to kill Jesus
55
Luke 43030 Then passing through the midst of
them, He went His way.
At this point, there is nothing that they could
do against the Lord. This is only the beginning
of His ministry and they would not touch
Him. They really wanted to kill Him. Jesus passed
in the midst of them and they did not even notice
it How is that? What really happened at that
moment, why did Jesus walk among them without
being noticed? Did Jesus blind their eyes? This
is not the first time that He would do something
like this Genesis 1910,11 2 King 618 Acts
1311.
56
Luke 431Then He went down to Capernaum, a city
of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths.
Jesus came down to Capernaum (v.31) This would be
from now on, Jesus' Headquarters Jesus came
down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. Note the
exact wording and look at verse 44 "He preached
in the synagogues of Galilee." Capernaum became
the headquarters of Jesus. Nazareth was Jesus'
hometown, but the city had rejected Him. He had
to move elsewhere.
57
Luke 431Then He went down to Capernaum, a city
of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths.
Capernaum was the manufacturing center of
Palestine therefore, it was strategically
located, always flooded with travelling
merchants. The major roads passed through its
borders, roads which connected such metropolitan
cities as Damascus, Jerusalem, and the great
Syrian cities of Tyre and Sidon. The great
caravan route leading to the Mediterranean Sea
also ran through the city (cp. Isaiah 91). It
was an ideal location for the spread of the
gospel, an ideal location for the Messiah to use
as His base of operations. (See note, Capernaum
Matthew 412-13.)
58
Luke 431Then He went down to Capernaum, a city
of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths.
Again Luke says that Jesus was teaching them on
the Sabbaths, that is, on Saturdays. We already
explained why. He moved from Nazareth where they
wanted to kill him, and moved not too far from
there. maybe ? Jesus was looking for the
Synagogues again. Remember that this is the
perfect spot to find these people and Jesus would
not waste any time in order to find them.
59
Luke 431Then He went down to Capernaum, a city
of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths.
Ruins of the synagogue
60
Luke 43232 And they were astonished at His
teaching, for His word was with authority.
His teaching was not ordinary. It was not the
kind of teaching that the people were used to
hearing. They were astonished at His doctrine.
It was what He taught that astounded them "His
word was with power."      His Word had
authority, the authority of God's Spirit. His
message had a commanding force to it. His message
had the power of God's Spirit upon it, quickening
the Word to the hearts of the hearers. Matthew
729.
61
Luke 43232 And they were astonished at His
teaching, for His word was with authority.
Why was Jesus word with Authority? What was in
Him that was not in any other from His day? John
716-18? this is the clue! John 1410? Jesus says
that The Father was always with Him Again, this
is what made Jesus unique out of all of the
best men from His days and from today. Jesus has
all Authority and He was never afraid to use
it! THEY WERE! Matthew 2818-20 Daniel 714
Matthew 1127
62
Luke 433 Now in the synagogue there was a man
who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he
cried out with a loud voice,
In the Nazareth Synagogue Jesus did not perform
any miracle, but here in Capernaum, there would
be one. Luke says that there was a man with an
unclean spirit First of all, let me ask you
this What was this man doing in the Synagogue
with an unclean spirit? The man was "in the
synagogue," actually attending the worship
service yet he was desperately unclean, as dirty
as could be.
63
Luke 433 Now in the synagogue there was a man
who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he
cried out with a loud voice,
1?The man was "in the synagogue," actually
attending the worship service yet he was
desperately unclean, as dirty as could be. 2?The
man had the spirit "of an unclean demon."
"Unclean" (akathartou) means that the man was
both morally and ceremonially unclean, dirty,
filthy. He was worshipping, but he was morally
unclean and corrupt his life was all dishevelled.
64
Luke 433 Now in the synagogue there was a man
who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he
cried out with a loud voice,
3?The evil spirit acknowledged Jesus' deity. He
knew three things. (Mark 123-24 for details)
a. He had nothing to do with Jesus. He was
unclean, dirty, and sinful in comparison to
Jesus. b. He knew that he was to be destroyed
by Jesus, that "For this purpose the Son of God
was manifested, that he might destroy the works
of the devil" day of judgment was coming. (1 John
38). c. He knew that Jesus was "the Holy One
of God." (James 219). He knew and proclaimed
that he stood face to face with the true Messiah,
the Son of the living God.
65
Luke 433 Now in the synagogue there was a man
who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he
cried out with a loud voice,
Thought 1. ?The person who is morally unclean
and dirty is in desperate straits. He is gripped
by an evil force that cries out in the very face
of God... ?Sin screams and yells very hard. Gods
ears are very open to that scream! If we ask for
help, God will listen to us and will helps
us. ?Remember sin makes dirty and ugly in front
of God. There is no relationship in between God
and us as long as we live in sin! Isaiah
115-18 Isaiah 591-2 Micah 34 Acts 751
66
Luke 434 saying, "Let us alone! What have we to
do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to
destroy us? I know who You are--the Holy One of
God!"
How many demons are in there? ?Let us alone!
? Matthew 829. ? James 219. ?Mark
121-25 ?Generally, when someone was possessed,
they were possessed by many demons. Such was the
case with the name of legion Mark 59. gt
Jesus came to destroy the works of Satan. No
wonder they asked Did you come to destroy us?

of a man in the synagogue.
  • Later that same day, Jesus went to Simons house
and healed his mother-in-law of a high fever.
  • That evening, Jesus healed many people of
    diseases and cast out demons.
  • By morning, Jesus left and went to a
    deserted place.

Luke 434 saying, "Let us alone! What have we to
do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to
destroy us? I know who You are--the Holy One of
God!"
Do the demons recognize Jesus? ?Yes, they
know the Son of God! ? Mark 125, 34-35.
? Mark 311. ? Acts 1915. ?Jesus had the
power to put under His feet everything that is in
this life. That is the confidence that we
have ?Jesus power is greater and more powerful
than any power that was, is, and will be in this
life!
Satan fears Jesus!
70
Luke 435 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be
quiet, and come out of him!" And when the demon
had thrown him in their midst, it came out of him
and did not hurt him.
Jesus will not give Satan the chance to speak.
Jesus says Be quiet! That's exactly what Satan
needs to do, to be quiet. Satan will not come out
of this man without a fight. He put the man down
on the floor is a symbolism of what sins does
when we follow it Do we recognized the Power
from Jesus when He speaks to us?
71
Luke 436 Then they were all amazed and spoke
among themselves, saying, "What a word this is!
For with authority and power He commands the
unclean spirits, and they come out."
Jesus rebuked him! ?Sin Must be punished,
rebuked and be thrown out once and for all. That
is what Jesus was doing here. ?Satan cannot speak
the truth. That is why Jesus does not listen to
him, he is a liar. ?He just said BE QUIET, AND
COME OUT OF HIM! ?After Jesus said that, the
spirit came out of the man and left him
alone. ?Matthew 2818 John 172
72
Luke 436 Then they were all amazed and spoke
among themselves, saying, "What a word this is!
For with authority and power He commands the
unclean spirits, and they come out."
Then they were all amazed! ?They were all amazed,
also in the Synagogue! Luke 422 ?These people
were always dependant on miracles in order to
trust in Jesus. They were walking by sight and
not by faith. They were always asking for
miracles and they were carnal and worldly minded.
73
Luke 436 Then they were all amazed and spoke
among themselves, saying, "What a word this is!
For with authority and power He commands the
unclean spirits, and they come out."
Then they were all amazed! ?They were all amazed,
also in the Synagogue! Luke 422 ?These people
were always dependant on miracles in order to
trust in Jesus. They were walking by sight and
not by faith. They were always asking for
miracles and they were carnal and worldly minded.
74
Luke 437 And the report about Him went out into
every place in the surrounding region.
The report about Jesus went everywhere ?Jesus is
gaining fame. This is just the beginning of
Jesus ministry. He is fulfilling right now the
prophecies from Isaiah 611-3. ?The people are
amazed and happy because finally salvation has
come, even thought many of them did not
understand, Jesus will benefit many by doing
miracles and healing the ones in need of Him.
75
Luke 438 Now He arose from the synagogue and
entered Simon's house. But Simon's wife's mother
was sick with a high fever, and they made request
of Him concerning her.
?Soon after the miracle in the synagogue Jesus
moves from there into the house of Peter. ?Was
Peter from Capernaum or Bethsaida. Bethsaida.
John 144. The most probable answer for this is
that maybe the moved to that city The point is
that Jesus will stay in that house while
preaching in Capernaum and the other regions
76
Luke 438 Now He arose from the synagogue and
entered Simon's house. But Simon's wife's mother
was sick with a high fever, and they made request
of Him concerning her.
?Jesus made Peters House His headquarter while
in that region, how do we know that? Capernaum.
Peters house there became Jesus base of
operations during his extended ministry in
Galilee (see 129 Mk 21 933). Peter is the
one living in Capernaum and Jesus is His guest
there is no doubt that base on many passages when
Jesus is in Capernaum He is at Peters house

Luke 438 Now He arose from the synagogue and
entered Simon's house. But Simon's wife's mother
was sick with a high fever, and they made request
of Him concerning her.
What happen in Peters house is something
important ?Peter has a Mother in Law
that was sick. But thats not my point, my point
is, if Peter was the first Pope, how is it that
he was married, knowing that the Catholic clergy
claim celibacy for the pope. ?From here we
can see that Peter was never a so called Pope.
79
Luke 438 Now He arose from the synagogue and
entered Simon's house. But Simon's wife's mother
was sick with a high fever, and they made request
of Him concerning her.
They made request to Jesus to heal her. Will
Jesus perform another miracle in Capernaum?
Matthew 814 Mark 129, 30 Peter, the others
disciples and maybe Peters wife made plea to
Jesus to heal her mother. 1 Cor 95
80
Luke 439 39 So He stood over her and rebuked the
fever, and it left her. And immediately she arose
and served them.
Jesus has the power over everything and
anything. Jesus rebuked the fever. Rebuke the
fever, how did Jesus do that? Can you rebuke
something that you dont see? What is Fever? an
abnormal condition of the body, characterized by
undue rise in temperature, quickening of the
pulse, and disturbance of various body functions.
81
Luke 440 40 When the sun was setting, all those
who had any that were sick with various diseases
brought them to Him and He laid His hands on
every one of them and healed them.
It was early evening and the sun was setting.
Jesus had been ministering rather extensively all
day and He was tired, yet He was approachable. He
could be approached at all hours. There was never
a closed door into His presence.
82
Luke 440 40 When the sun was setting, all those
who had any that were sick with various diseases
brought them to Him and He laid His hands on
every one of them and healed them.
The people who came to Him were totally helpless.
Every one of them had to be brought, yet someone
cared enough to bring them.
83
Luke 440 40 When the sun was setting, all those
who had any that were sick with various diseases
brought them to Him and He laid His hands on
every one of them and healed them.
Thought 1. Note two challenging lessons. ? The
most helpless can come or be brought to Jesus. He
is always available to help. ? There is a strong
challenge to us. We need to care enough to bring
the helpless to Jesus. ? Jesus did not bypass or
overlook a single one. He touched everyone and
healed everyone. No matter the disease, they were
healed.
84
Luke 440 40 When the sun was setting, all those
who had any that were sick with various diseases
brought them to Him and He laid His hands on
every one of them and healed them.
Thought 2. No one, no matter how helpless, no
one ever comes to Jesus that He does not help.
Rich or poor, strong or weak, the Lord forbids no
one. Matthew 816-17 Luke 531-32 Acts 1038
Isaiah 254 Isaiah 534.
85
Luke 441 41 And demons also came out of many,
crying out and saying, "You are the Christ, the
Son of God!" And He, rebuking them, did not allow
them to speak, for they knew that He was the
Christ.
Evil spirits came out of many! Jesus is doing His
job according to Bible prophecy. Jesus is
rebuking Satan for saying that Jesus was the Son
of God What was the problem? Is Satan lying when
he says that? John 844 James 219.
86
Luke 442 42 Now when it was day, He departed and
went into a deserted place. And the crowd sought
Him and came to Him, and tried to keep Him from
leaving them
  • When it is morning
  • Jesus sought to be alone, seeking the presence of
God. Jesus was exhausted and drained, spiritually
as well as physically. Apparently, He had been
ministering all day and night, that is, for
almost twenty-four hours without a break.
  • He tried to get alone in a deserted place.
  • He needed to be refreshed and revived in body and
spirit. He wanted time alone with God.
  • He was sought out and was begged to stay
  • He was sought out by the people who begged
Him to stay. They were desperate and helpless.

87
Luke 442 42 Now when it was day, He departed and
went into a deserted place. And the crowd sought
Him and came to Him, and tried to keep Him from
leaving them
Thought 1. Note two great lessons. 1) We need to
seek the renewal of our bodies and spirits in the
Lord's presenceseek renewal much more than most
of us do. 2) We need to seek Him out and beg for
His help while He may be found. When Jesus was on
the earth in the body He could help only those
who surrounded Him. Now that He is in the Spirit
and able to minister everywhere at once, so few
of us are seeking Him out. What an example these
people were in seeking Him! 1 Chron. 1611
Isaiah 556 Psalm 7328 Psalm 14518 Hebrews
1022.
88
Luke 443 but He said to them, "I must preach the
kingdom of God to the other cities also, because
for this purpose I have been sent."
I MUST! To preach the gospel of Jesus is a must.
Jesus considered the need. This congregation in
Calgary also is taking the preaching of the
Gospel serious like Jesus. For Jesus to preach
the gospel was a Must, the questions is
why? Jesus answered for this purpose I have been
sent? Luke 1910 John 94 John 317.
89
Luke 443 but He said to them, "I must preach the
kingdom of God to the other cities also, because
for this purpose I have been sent."
I MUST! Jesus was sent to preach the
gospel? Northside church of Christ has been
established by Lord Jesus to do exactly the
same. We are not in here just to come every
Sunday and listen to lessons and sing etc We are
here to tell sinners that Jesus cares. And this
will be done by preaching the gospel.
90
Luke 444 And He was preaching in the synagogues
of Galilee.
Jesus was preaching! Mark 139 Why not send
someone else? How great example Jesus is giving
us about preaching. Jesus and his followers in
the first century were taking the preaching
seriously. How about us today? Matthew 1023
Acts 84 Acts 1119 2 Timothy 42. Even if we
face persecution we MUST preach the gospel..
