Why?

• Why is there an annual research activity survey?
• You (the HEI) need to update your RAS 2004 data
• (if you submitted to the 2001 RAE)
• We (HEFCE) need this updated data to
• indicate the level of research activity in
  2005-06
• inform allocation of 2006-07 research funds

Entering student data

• DEFINITIONS mode, year, Unit of Assessment
• All RAS students must be registered, supervised,
  researching
• CHANGES IN now only two forms,
• 2005 all students must now also satisfy Home
  EC criteria
• Full-time students - headcount only
• - form R1a (no longer an R2a form)
• Part-time students - headcount and FTE
• - forms R1b (no longer an R2b form)

Changes to research funding

• In 2005-6, R2a and R2b data (Home EC
  students) were used for research degree programme
  supervision funds, distributed by cost weights
  and student numbers
• (consultation for PGR supervision funding
  HEFCE 2003/58)
• In 2006-07, research income from charity will
  be used to inform a new support element for
  charities research income of 135 million
• (further details in circular letter HEFCE
  16/2005)
