Using Visual Scene Displays
  • Visual scene displays (VSDs) portray events,
people, actions, objects and activities against
the backgrounds within which they occur or exist.
These scenes are used as an interface to language
    and communication (Blackstone, 2005)
  • They provide contextual cues and personal
relevance which in turn create more effective
    communication for some users.

7
Research Concerning VSDs
  • VSDs where found to facilitate communication and
support navigation as well as increased comfort
    levels, confidence, connectedness, and pleasure
during communication in individuals with aphasia
    (Dietz et al., 2006).

8
Research Cont.
  • VSDs bypass reliance on linguistic processing
needed for extensive verbalization (Dietz et al.,
2006). However it can be used to foster the
growth of linguistic processing by providing a
platform for integrating other types of
    communication supports.
  • Young children are more accurate using VSDs than
    traditional layouts (Drager, Light, Fallon,
    Jefferson, Speltz, 2003)

9
Food For Thought
  • Janice Light stated Traditionally we have
reduced navigational demands by reducing the
number of language concepts available (Light
    Drager, 2005).
