What is methane?

• Methane, CH4, is the main component of natural
  gas. It is used for home heating, in gas stoves,
  and hot-water heaters.

• Propane, C3H8,is the major component of bottled
  gas used for home heating and for barbeque grills.

• Butane, C4H10, is compressed and liquefied and
  used in disposable lighters.

• Methane, propane, and butane belong to a group of
  hydrocarbons known as the alkanes.
