Title: New Tools for Mass Customization: 2D3D Body Mapping

1
New Tools for Mass Customization 2D/3D Body
Mapping
  • Center for Merchandising Design Technology
  • Central Michigan University
  • http//www.cmdt.cmich.edu

2
Project objectives include
  • Creation of a searchable database containing
thermal profiles, body scans, mapped thermal
    images
  • Clustering thermal profiles to facilitate the
development of garments that better handle heat
and moisture at the skin surface
  • Utilizing technology to solve fit and other
    functional design problems

3
3D Body Scanner
  • Collects 300,000 data points in 12 seconds,
creates over 80 different body measurements and a
    3D image
  • Used in the 3D thermal mapping process
  • Create custom apparel, redesign, examine fit,
    study the microclimate

4
3D body scan
5
Examine fit issues
6
Examples of Bra Fit
Poor Fitting Bra
Well Fitting Bra
7
Useful for communicating fit issues
8

9
Software can slice the images for microclimate
examination, to determine area volume and
circumference measurements
shoulder plane
bust plane
waist plane
hips plane
10
Thermal camera
  • Provides immediate, accurate, visual
understanding of the thermal emission of the
    human body
  • Allows for examination of thermal patterns by
    consumer group
  • Useful for apparel design, determination of best
location of special finishes and special knit or
    woven constructions

11
Different types of knit structures
12
3D knit technology
13
Thermal analysis of 3D knit technologyafter
exercise
Cotton t-shirt
Thermal analysis indicated that after exercise,
subject is cooler in NTS with mapped 3D knit

14
Examination of thermal patterns
Heavier individuals typically demonstrate a more
variable heat pattern than thinner individuals
who display a more uniform thermal profile.
15
Environmental chamber, skin thermistors, humidity
sensors
Both temperature and humidity can be controlled
in the environmental chamber
16
Subjects skin temperature can be measured
continually using skin thermistors
Sensors can be placed in areas where there are
special construction techniques or applied
finishes
Sensor allows for continuous humidity data
collection in the microclimate
17
Data logger and sensory evaluation

2D/3D Mapping
  • Image registration involves picking landmarks in
    common
  • Once landmarks found, the transformation is done
(in this case a linear conformal transformation)
and the thermal image is scaled and resized to
    match the body scanned image.

20
Result after registering the thermal image to the
body scanned image.
After mapping, the 3D figure can be manipulated
posed while retaining the thermal information
21
Data mining
Currently over 650 subjects
  • Subjects can be broken down by
  • gender
  • age
  • weight and height
  • BMI category
  • circumference measurements
  • level of exercise frequency

22
Thermal Profiling
Normal
Obese
The thermal profiles can be categorized into
spatial regions of similar temperature. These
regions can be provide common areas where extra
(or less) insulatory or moisture wicking
materials are needed.
23
Thermal Profiling
  • Sample Analysis of Males, Aged 15-24, Grouped by
    BMI Categories
  • Single factor ANOVA looking at radiant thermal
    fluxes
  • Shows statistically significant variations in
    means between BMI categories

24
MFDI Web Portal
  • Web portal for data querying, visualization and
analysis of demographic info, body fit and
    thermal profiles

Mock-ups of the MFDI web portal
