Title: Large potential for energy savings

1
Why a focus on appliances?
  • Large potential for energy savings
  • Quick return on investment
  • Energy savings means reducing greenhouse gas
    emissions

2
Which Electric Appliances Consume the Most?
3
Mandatory Energy Labels
  • Since 1996, various European Directives have made
energy labels mandatory for different types of
    appliances
  • Air-conditioning
  • Light sources
  • Cooling and freezing devices
  • Ovens
  • Washing machines
  • Dryers
  • Dishwashers
  • This list will be expanded in the near future

4
Energy Label Classifications
  • The EU energy label
  • Class A 42-55 of energy consumption
  • Class B 55-75
  • Class C 75-90
  • Class D 90-100
  • Class E 100-110
  • Class F 110-125
  • Class G gt125
  • 100 is the reference energy consumption
    according to European guideline 2003/66/EG
  • Today, most appliances are in Class A

5
New Energy Labels
  • In 2003, a new European guidelines introduced the
A and A energy efficiency classes
  • Class A 30-42
  • Class A lt30

6
The Most Efficient Appliances?
  • You can find an overview of energy-efficient
appliances on the Topten website. The site helps
consumers find the best domestic appliances
  • From the European platform site, you can click
through to sites for Switzerland, Austria and
France. The sites for other countries will go
    live in the near future

7
How to Choose
  • One of the most important criteria in choosing
the best-performing appliance is the lifecycle
    cost
  • LCC the sum of the purchase price and the
energy cost of an appliance over its life span
  • On www.topten.ch you can rank appliances purchase
price and electricity costs for the next fifteen
    years

8
LCC Example (1/2)
  • Which is the best stand-alone refrigerator
(without freezer) with a volume over 200 litres?
  • Compare on the Topten Web site
  • Type 1, 255 l 943 (purchase) 304 (energy)
    1247 , or 4.89 /l
  • Type 2, 222 l 768 339 1107 or 4.99 /l
  • Type 3, 255 l 862 403 1265 or 4.96 /l
  • Type 4, 223 l 1001 410 1411 or 6.33
    /l
  • Inefficient model, 222 l 568 736 1304
    or 5.87 /l

9
LCC Example (2/2)
  • The best choice Type 1 (LCC 4.89 /l)
  • Type 1 has the lowest energy cost for the next
fifteen years. It is the only A label in this
    category
  • The inefficient model is the cheapest appliance
to purchase (568 ), but the most expensive in
    energy usage (736 )

10
Round-up
  • Purchase decision should be based on LCC
  • LCC purchase price energy consumption
    throughout life of appliance
  • Short payback period for energy-efficient
    appliances
  • Energy efficiency labels are mandatory in the EU
  • Most appliances sold today are class A
  • A labelled appliances are most energy-efficient
